Military entrenching tool usage

Herb Jones

New member
Does anyone use an army tool for their digs? I've seen the lesche shovels, and just don't have that kind of disposable cash.... although they seem to be very well made and look nice, it seems the ability to fold compactly and configure into a pick/hoe/spade may make the standard issue E- Tool a better choice. Am I foolish to think that it will suffice?

Hunting in the woods or other out of the way places it usually doesn't matter what you use.
In many posts hunters talk about using these trenching tools from low quality to high and they seem to work pretty well...till the low quality ones break, anyway.
In public parks anything larger than a hand digger tends to cause great concern among the muggles.
Even something like a Sampson digger which makes extremely precise plugs that can be replaced and hidden easily will cause many to think you are using a huge shovel to dig big holes and are severely screwing up the landscape if the see you carrying and using one.
Ignorance is a real thing out there, actual facts sometimes don't matter much to many and common sense isn't so common anymore.

Thank you , I haven't done any parks yet, there are virtually none nearby...

Muggle?

Muggle?

Muggle...a Harry Potter term for non magic folk.
In this context it would refer to people not in he hobby and don't understand anything about it...but still form negative opinions about all f us despite that.

Please do not use that trenching tool or any other shovel in parks. Using any kind of shovel in a park is just plain bad optics for the busy bodies to see.
Instead use a garden trowel in parks.
This hobby is already under varying pressure from clueless do-gooders to ban detecting in some parks.

Of course,... at some point reason should come
Into play. Wouldn't dig a hole on a baseline either....

Digging a hole on a baseline would be all right in the off season. Of course it would still have to be filled in right.

I hunt mainly in the woods and my 1944 army shovel is sharp as a razor----I don't dig, I slice and then rake the dirt back, cover with leaves and ghost on my way. I bought one of the "must haves" used it for 15 minutes and went back to ole 44.

I bought a
Lesche relic shovel. My entrenching
Tool works just As well, and I
Prefer th belt Pouch as opposed
To Carrying Or Dragging Something around. I
Still Use The lesche In Open Areas, but not because
It's any more useful... it's well made, but if
I had it to do over again, I'd keep my $$ and
Stick with my e-tool... once you get past the hand trowel
Depth , the holes seem to be about the same size no matter
What you dig with... as with any hobby, most folks
Like the fancy stuff.... want and need are far far apart!
