Mikie or Wayne. Do either of you reload or used to?

Now that the doldrums are here in between snow plowing, I've started casting up bullets and reloading again. Good way to past the time in the winter. Both of you being hunters I was curious as to if you did. I would figure Wayne, being a guide would more than likely not being out in the woods more scouting etc.
Mikie, I figure yes, being land based and likes to try everything. I used to cast heads for all of my guns, but now mostly just for the pistols and also for a old Rolling Block .43 spanish rifle. Have to fire form the brass for it also, nothing available over the counter in this area except special order from custom cartridge builders. Anyhow, got to thinking, so figured I'd ask. One of the those stay indoors days. Its up to a comfy 10 now. Looks like sun might break thru later so I can do some more clean up plowing and push the sides back more. No melting going on for sure.

Yes, I do.. I just did up a hundred rounds or so of 25-06. I got a very nice 117 grain nosler and custom made the powder measurement [IMR4530] to get the optimal performance for me.

I have cast up the lead for a buddy who has a 44-40 Winchester. It is a fun winter thing to do..... and it helps to pass the time.

I would love to see a photo of your rolling block. I have found them to be a most fascinating mechanism... I have a couple... my latest being an old savage .22 serial number 81. A fun gun to use. It is a break down so I always keep it in a vehicle... I have had to use it a couple of times after a deer has been hit on the road and is thrashing around. It is too dangerous to try to get close to one after it has been hit, what with the hooves going like mad.

the longer one is a .43 Spanish. Date on it is 1879. Really nice condition. I picked it up for $15.00. And old lady said she had one down in the basement if I wanted it. I'm thinking major rust and just a wall hanger piece. I get there and its wrapped in oil like paper and packed with kosmoline or something like it. Bluing was in really nice shape, wood has raised grain but still fine. Inside barrel, rifling was perfect. I make the shells for it and cast heads. Nice shooting rifle.
I picked up some shells for it at a gun show, but they are worth more as they are so only used them to check the ones I made for it. Old 351 brass can be fire formed and trimed to work for it. The other one I bought for the wood on it and the action. I built it up, put a duglass barrel on it and really enjoy shooting it. Its in a 45/70 and one of my favorite pieces. Also have them in 7mm, 22 and a few others. The pictures make it look rough as these still has the packing grease on some of them. Here are few shots, some recent, so older.... One today of me sitting with it.... Geo

Nice collection you have George!

The rolling and falling block rifles have always been favorites, but I have stayed away from collecting guns I won't be using.

It can be an expensive hobby and maney always seems to get spent in other places, like paying the bills.

I first started re-loading in 1963 with a Pacific "C" press in 30-06.

It's been a long time since I re-loaded, but I've kept my gear handy.

How long will powder keep?

I have some that is pretty old and as much as I hate to dispose of it, I also wouldn't want to chance using it either.

Toss it.. Or, if you are in any doubt, powdeer is cheap.... Buy some new stuff, reload some rounds and then you will have no problems. Bullets, being airtight, keep a VERY long tome.

Heck I have been shooting some over 20 year old .22 rounds.. Never a misfire.

I started in the late 50's in the Army camp. A friends Dad was a Captain armorer and had just bought a .243 which Winchester had recently legitimized from the wildcat status. Canadian Army had just switched from the .303 British to the 7.62 NATO (.30:geek: and he was pulling the bullets from the military ammo then resizing to .243, collapsing a few cases in the process and breaking primer punch pins too.
I was totally hooked on the fast .243's and such and reloading, never looked back, and by the time i was in my 20's i was teaching reloading at a couple fish and game clubs as well as to friends. Those were the days! I could buy surplus H-4831 at the surplus store for 60 cents a lb!

I cut my teeth on Outdoor Life, Jack O'Connor, and the 270 (along with numerous varminters) which i used for many years until the 7mm Rem Mag came out then i switched. My back up guide gun when we hunted Grizzly was an open sight Browning semi auto in .338 Win mag, sadly they quit making them after only a couple years and wish i still had it, just because:biggrin:
Heck it has been so long that i do not even recognize half the new calibers out there:biggrin:

Those are really beautiful classic weapons you have there! You and i could have spent a lot of quality "man time" in the reloading room, the field, and at the range i would say:thumbup:

And old friend of my fathers, from back woods of Maine taught me to reload. Jungle Jim was his name. He had more guns than he needed and like most gun nuts, there are never to many. He was a hunter so did a lot of rifle loading and was a big fan of the 300 H&H. Everytime I went there, which was weekly on Friday nights and usually the Saturday night also. We would watch wrestling and cast bullets, prime shells etc. Usually, if the men brought back a deer, it was our job to dress it. I still have a lot of his old reloading books, like the Lyman Cast bullet ones for stuff no longer made and the newer ones also. I remember the first 220 Swift he got. Little screamer....He was big into woodchucks and got me into them also. I settled on a .222 for those but hunted them also with Enfields, Mark #4. Nice shooting gun. Then you could by them locally at Orbits, for $15.00, as many as you wanted. I liked the Mark #4. Lot of the guys like the cabine one but it didn't do much for me. I had joined the NRA by then and we could get the MI Carbine, little 30 cal and those were fun to mess with. They were $15.00. Also at the Red Bone Arsenal the 03A3 30.06 Sprinfields were $25.00... I still have one of them here that I sporterized. Even had a couple of the thumb snatchers the MI Garrands. Wish I still had that.... But like you I'm sure, every time I hit a gun shop, it seemed to be swapping time. I'd buy up the ones with beat stocks, and re do them, or reblue them, cold blue, nothing fancy but made them better and resold them or traded up. Usually make $5 to 15.00 on one, that was about it....

I have a 243 around here in a Sako. Nice shooting gun also. My wife liked it for the light recoil. Thats as small as you can go here legally for deer here in CT. I'll have to take more pictures here. I liked them all. I have a nice 444 Marlin here, lever action....Awesome brush gun. More gun than one needs in this area, but I bought it right, and its a rare one.... Like I mentioned, I liked fancy wood on them if I could get it. didn't shoot any better but sure nice to look at.

I have a nice Browning 78 you would probably like. Its in a 7mm Mag. Truth is I never shot it, its still in the box. Had a friend who had another buddy who worked for Browning who was sending him stuff. He got strapped for cash and offered all he had of them to me. I have 5 of them 4 unfired in 25-06, 22-250,
7mm Mag, 45-70, 240 Weatherby Mag. All single shots.... I like single shot shooting. Cuts down on the reloading bench.

Like you I bought powders in bulk.... Still have a bunch in 3031, Bulls eye, lot of different IMR powder, like 4895, 4064,., liked Unique also, still use it in the hand guns, but I'm seeing a lot of new powders out now that I'd like to try. A lot of mine have age on them to the point i'd be better off to destroy them and start over....

Thinking back a lot of the guys were playing with the Jap 6.5 then and the Roberts also....There were a lot of wildcat guys in the club.... I only target shoot now so go for the accuracy loads and less recoil. Yet some of the better loads are the upper end ones at least in pistol powders these days....

Have you priced powder lately....Way up there and a lot of stuff like primers etc your paying a hazmat fee to ship on top of it.. I try to buy locally when I can and keep them in business. Sure less gun shops around now then there were then.

Getting harder to fine lead now also. I was a big user of wheel weights, still can get them but they are less now since they went to this stick on stuff. Even had a good supply of Linotype for printing press. Little on the hard side but mixed up right it was fine with gas checks...

.243, .270. 30.06, etc, etc. I have settled on the 25.06.. It is enough to take down the coyotes with a smaller grain slug.... but with a 120 grain, I can , and have, dropped a moose with it.

All in all, I pretty good all purpose gun for me.

However, if I get an elk draw, i will go for the 30.06.

I still have the others.. but now my collecting pretty much starts and ends with falling/rolling block single shot guns. I really like them

and most especially, .22s

Do you go on the Gun Trader and Gunbroker.com web sites. Some decent deals can be had there from time to time... You would not thing so in such a small state but lot of gun people here. Lot of shooting clubs also. Fin, Fur and Feather is just down the street from me, but they are more into trap and skeet.
Big bird club. I hunt the cripples that end up here when I see them. Fox or coyotes will get them if I don't. They hold a lot of field trials there.

Geo.

Sure have gotten rid of a couple rifles wish now I won't have. Rolling blocks sure are pretty. Got a few old Winchester single shots and pumps, and model 5 automatic. Did buy a 223 Weatherby, this year. like I needed another rifle, but with all the grand kids I am going to teach them the how to hunt and enjoy the outdoors. I want each one to have there own gun. I gave my best friend my 300 Weatherby Mag. Him and his son been going bear hunting and this year going on a elk hunt so they needed a cannon. If you guys ever need a scope I found the best deals on this web site. http://swfa.com/default.aspx go to sample list there are shot show specials and trade ins and factory refurbished ones. I never buy cheap scopes learned my lesson on those. I started buying Zeiss Optics and some Leupolds, Just after using Zeiss it's like a seeing is believing. So many of the shooting we do is early morning and late evening, I won't to make sure I can see what I am shooting at. Coyotes will stick there head just out of the brush and look at you, will be 200 yards and all you see is the head. Good optics make the world of difference. I think my favorite rifle is my old 22-250 Sako finbear I got, it just is a sweet rifle. I been looking for a 25-06 for my oldest daughter. That girl is a dead eye shot, love to see her smoke the guy's when we all go hunting, sure missed not getting to hunt with her this year, but next year she will be there with me dove and deer hunting. I bet she doesn't have any more babies during hunting season. And again George some really pretty guns.

Most of our meat critters are in the middle-weight range and I scaled down to one Remington Model 600 (Carbine) in .243 Winchester and A Ruger bolt action in 7MM-08 to lighten my load some.

The old Remington has put lots of Venison in the freezer over the years.

The -08 was used maybe 2 times before I put them both away for my crop of future hunters.

Wayne, my Mom loved to watch wrestling as did my old Grampa, but I could neverget very interested in it my self. Remember "Bull Curry"? He was one of the toughest looking characters in the game in his day back in the '50s.

He worked as a guard at the courthouse in Hartford, Connecticut after retiring from the ring, so I've been told.

Of course I do remember "The George"!

My Dad took her to a match in Vancouver just ONCE! He had no idea how riled up his sweet wife could get!
After Mom's favorite guy got beat up she leaped out of her chair at ringside as the bad guy winner was strutting around outside the ring and went after him with her 6 inch Hatpin! ( remember those?) He lit out for the dressing room pronto and Dad caught Mom before she could follow him:rofl:
He never took her again and was happy when they put it on TV!

back then but one of them had a sleeper hold. There was and Indian also that was popular. We watched that, and boxing all the time. After it was over my buddy Roland and I would put the gloves on and beat each other to death. He lives in Hermiston Oregon now. His Dad was the Jungle Jim guy I spoke about who taught me to reload.
