Mike (Virginia Beach) or anyone that uses the Excalibur . . . got a question!

Hi,

I'm getting an Excalibur in a couple days and was wanting to know how it sounds completely under water?

Is there a lot less sound coming out of the headphones when fully submerged?

Also, when under water do you use an underwater pinpointer? If so what brand?

Thanks!

Tony

Well Tony, I have never done any diving with mine, so I would not have any reason to put my head under water. I've actually only gone waist deep with mine and only done that a few times. The reason is that in doing ocean hunting, there is the surf to consider. And I mostly hunt at night at low tide and for some reason every time I've gone out there it's been just a little too rough to go in for my taste. So somebody else will have to answer that one.

As for the pinpointer, I don't know if divers use them. I wouldn't think so, since it's pretty easy to use the coil. I find that the Excal is one of the easiest machines to pinpoint with in normal ID mode. I never use the pinpoint switch.

Tony i use two detectors for diving, Excalibur & CZ20 you can hear both of them very well underwater. You don,t need a pinpointer just a small digger or just fan the bottom with your hand. The only pinpointer i know that is water proof is the 560 VibraProbe. Good luck it,s a new world down below.

The reason I was asking is a guy on another forum was saying his sound from his Excalibur was fine above water but under water he could hardly hear anything. I was hoping this was not the case with all of them.

Thanks Frank!

Do you detect much in the surf? If so, how do you hold your position where your find is whild waves are crashing on you? Is it easier than I suspect? I will be taking mine out to California and southern Alabama (if it is still there after Katrina).

I can't always schedule my trips to CA when there is a low tide so I may have to go up against the waves.

also . . . does your cz pick up fine gold chains?

Tony

Tony Dive in freshwater lakes. CZ20 will not pickup fine gold chains and such. But what are these worth compared to gold rings and diamond ring, so i don't worry about fine gold.

Tony's reply:
Ah, the sound of reason! I love it! I never thought about it that way. I was thinking I was coming up short by not being able to find the fine chains.

In California in the dry beach I found two small gold links together with my Explorer XS and the SunRay 12" coil. I was amazed not just that I found them but that I found them so deep.

Thanks for the help!

Tony
