Might have a problem?????

Got my X-terra 50 yesterday. Today I placed a clad penny, nickle, dime and quarter on my kitchen floor since it was raining out and cold. I tested the floor and all was clear. I went over the coins at about 6 inches and nothing. I had to get within 2 inches or less to get any reading at all.... whats going on??? Will try outside tomorrow on the grass or driveway if it's dry enough. Never had that problem with any other detector before.

I am one of the original field testers of the X-Terra 50 and I don't think that there is anything wrong with your machine. You might try a bench test with the coil out away from any metal, but frankly I don't put much stock in air tests in terms of determining the depth capability of a detector. What I use them for is to check target response, both audio & visual.

When I got my test unit I ran various targets over the coil (just a few inches) and made my notes as to the various responses. Then I went out in the field & actually detected to find out how the machine did in the field with regard to buried targets. And I was (and continue to be) impressed.

You will find several posts on this forum from users who are doing very well with the X-Terra's, and you can also refer to my post of 10/24/05 for additional information.

So I think that you will be fine with your new X-Terra. If you happen to have a test garden I think that would be a much better test for your unit, but if not I'd suggest just getting out there & putting the detector thorugh its paces.

If you encounter any other problems or concerns, please post your question(s) & I'll do my best to answer them.

Many floors have nails in them as this is where I test many of mine. I have a bar and the floor is full of nails and I find very few detector will pick up a coin at any great distance on this floor. Some wont even work at all. This is why I ask if you tried all metal as you would have got a low tone on all the nails and would cause a loss of depth.
Try testing it with the coil in the air and wave coins across it.
I just tried the X-Terra 30 tonight and in a air test i could get a dime at around 7 inches while on the floor with the nails it was around 4 inches. If I moved the coin right on top of one of the nails it was around 2 inches.

Give it a try in the air or outside and see what it will do.

I went outside this morning and dropped a quarter, dime, nickle and penny and even though the grass was a little wet everything went well. All were picked up at at least at 8" and then I went to my back yard and tried to find an old quarter I buried last year at about 10 inches but no luck... UNTIL I cranked up the sensitivity to about 18-20 and there it was. NOW I know all is ok and look forward to a few and I do mean few 40 degree days to get out and give it a real try in the field... thanks again Bill... and of course the rest of you guys as well.... this is a great forum!!!
