Any advice about metal detecting the beaches along the western Mexico coast line near Puerto Vallerta? Am I going to get my detector confiscated?

They get pretty touchy I hear !!

I have taken my MD to detector to Mexico several times with no problems. the other guy says Jail with a big fine?, new to me.

I've been there with mine, too, on two occasions. Never had a problem there, or with cruise lines, either. Depending on the beach, I would check, though, so you have no surprises. HH jim tn

We pretty much know the golden rule, always ask permission! But if you find something, good luck getting it over. They know about the Gold and artifacts, all they need is to see is that M D and they might search you.
Just a fact, Your under there law when you come back in the States.

I took a metal detector to Mazatlan this Feburary, in a check in bag - no hassles by anyone on the way down or back up, nor at the beach resort we stayed at. Not sure about detecting anywhere other than the beaches though. Hotel staff that tended the beach were fine with me detecting as long as I took out trash I found, filled holes and did my detecting either at the end of the day, or early, early in the morning before they raked the beach. There's even some ex-pats in Mazatlan that detect the beach regularly I understand. Not sure what you'd need to do if you did find historically significant items.
