I believe your coin is from the late 1800's, as you expected........ it has a marked similarity to this coin:
A Mexican dollar. Obverse: An eagle, a snake held in its beak and talons, poised on a prickly pear. Legend: 'REPUBLICA-MEXICANA'. Reverse: The cap of liberty, rays proceeding from it inscribed: 'LIBERTAD'. Legend: '8R . GO. 1889 . R . R . 10 D . 20C'.
Your coin still has the "Republica" mostly legible and on the obverse, the "20C" is still apparent.
