meter reading

I noticed that in an air test of a coin the meter numbers got lower as I got farther away from the coin. Why is that? Does this happen in the field too? If so, I have to assume that a very deep quarter would not register in the 30's. How do you know when you are above a deep coin? Will you still get a high tone even though the meter has a lower number?

I have noticed that as well on air tests. I have attempted to clarify this in the field. I have dug some deep quarters (6-plus inches) and when it finds the coin, it sticks in the 30's no problem. But I'd like to see what happens on even deeper coins.

I noticed in my air tests the low conductive targets increase in value as the distance from the coil increased and the high conductive targets decreased in value as the distance increases.
However I don't have enough experience in the dirt to say that holds true in the ground.

The C$ does not airtest that well....& I've seen a few try & sell guys sell 'em after a "test" in their dining room <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> It works far better with a ground matrix. I have seen in the ground, deep coins will not drop that much. Maybe a few digits downward, & usually you get a high tone still. Besides, if a silver quarter that's supposed to be in the 30's is say 10" down or on edge. If it reads a +27, +28 that's till a very "diggable" coin area. I dig anything positive so I don't risk missing something good. HH, Bill
