Meter Problems Revisited Bought a new Digi Search!

Buried Crap NJ

New member
I posted Oct 8th that I was having a problem with my Minelab Meter interfering with a Sun ray 5 in coil. Along with the silent switch not working correctly. The silent switch was a error on my part, it was working as advertized.
For the Meter I ordered a brand new Minelab 180 Digi Search Meter from my local dealer. It arrived yesterday and ! tried it out this morning with all my coils and it worked perfect! I guess when I modified the Sovereign XS-2 550 Meter to a 180 Meter the little coil didn't like it? All is good now.

I had read here that minelab was discontinuing the digisearch meter, do you know if its back in production or your dealer got you one that is new but old stock?

Id also read here that the meters that are built into the Sov (the ones done by Joe that replace the speaker) would not work with the SEF coils but never new the stock minelab meters that were modded would not work work with the S5. Glad you mentioned the S5, Ive not had one in years and not long ago picked up a used one in like new shape to give a shot again, forgot I had it put away in a box:laugh:

Neil, it was new old stock. I also read that the Dixie/Joe Patrick mod can be made to work with SEF coil. You just need to send your coil with the mod. You have to do that anyway even with a Minelab 10in coil. You just can't switch back and forth between coils! I am not sure why My 5in did not work with the older meter. Well it did work just at the lowest sensitivity setting possible.

You cant switch back and forth between coils with that mod? The one that has the meter in the control box in place of the speaker?

That's correct, but you can have the meter tuned for any one coil.

Looks to me like it's time to learn to hunt with the ole ears instead of the eyes !!!....:) ....... Not a bad alternative at all !!.... I had a coupe of meters at one time that worked well with my GT ......I decided it was time to leave the meters off and hunt without ..... It really sharpens your senses a bit .....The Sovereign has one of the most expressive languages of any machine that I have ever used .... I just bought a used GT as I just can't stay away from the Sovereign for long ...... I know Critter touted the language of the Sovereign amonst other attributes , and I got to witness jonesing to hear the Sovereign speak again ....:) .......Jim

Synthnut,
I could not agree more about learning the tones rather than depending on a meter. I have always advocated this method for those that chose a detector with a meter. I have told others to cover the meter and learn the machine and confirm you thoughts with the meter. That's what I am doing to speed the process of learning the GT. It really does speed the process up. Just a piece of cardboard with tape on the meter and your good to go! I do have to note I have heard several chirps from different angles that had I not had the meter saying 177-180 range I would have passed them up. Deep dimes have been behind those targets, none have been silver yet!(land) Now the issue with the 5in coil was different. I have a nice older beach that is trash strewn where each target dug comes up with iron bolts nuts washer and nails, sometimes all of them in one scoop along with a nice piece of silver! None of those sounds would have been dug without the meter and 5in coil! You can't move the coil without a tone or null! The 1946 class ring was dug by accident, the guy was so frustrated with the constant noise had given up and was walking away and placed his detector down to take his headphones off. Ya he put in on the ring directly.
