With that said...
Most learn a Sov better without the meter because it forces you to listen. If you spend all your time looking at a meter instead of listening, you will miss a lot of good finds since many good finds will not give you a perfect reading (or sound either).
Others will tell you that you learn the Sov faster with a meter.
Faster or better? Or do you need to learn it to any great extent at all (beach hunting)?
I find the meter most useful for spotting objects that I want to ignore that have a sound close to objects that I want to dig. This use of a mostly "reject list" gets applied more of the time than anything.
Other things add into the formula......
Target strength, predictability of target depth (both trash and treasure), target symmetry (how it hits from different directions), and also what I'm looking for in particular (if anything).
Knowing when to look at a meter and when not to will take you a long way in the right direction. Too much meter dependency will screw you.

Listen to Art.
I have a Sovereign Gt, I bought a meter for it, I like the meter but it's more easy to learn the detector without the meter.
Then if you want a meter get one the only one available is the digital from Mine lab that I know of that will work with the GT.
