Meteors and ACE 250

Thanks to all who posted.
I have yet to hear from anyone a Garrett.
I had the machine in all metal mode....the meteor is a meteor it was a gift from a man that has a very large collection of meteors. This one is a Franconia Meteor and it will snap to a magnet in a flash.
My Minelab would pick it up with no problems and I think I will check a few other machines as I can.
I am now saving for a Minelab Xterra 70 and will give the ACE to my wife to play with. I have lost faith in Garrett after not hearing anything and I have sent 3 emails, 2 to Mary and one in general to Garrett.

Hi azdigger,
I have just sent a message to Mary at Garretts, with the information of your problem and also a copy of this last posting.
There must be a reason why you haven't had an answer, and probably the emails haven't got through.
I have had this problem occassionaly when customers have sent me an email, and also I have had several of my emails not being received by Garrett.
Remember, nothing is perfect. It's the same as ordinary postal mail; this can go astray as well.
In regards to the possible meteorite problem, I believe that you should have an independant assesment by some other person who knows about them.
We have iron stone rocks over here that you would swear to be meteorites.
They are heavy, look heat affected that is typical of meteorites and they will jump to a magnet very easily, the same as yours does.
These rocks will cause most units to signal on them as a good signal, especially if the units do not have their prefixed ground balance set correctly. This is even with a Minelab detector.
They can cause major problems when gold prospecting.
The only way to really check them with a metal detector, is to have a unit with the old TR mode on them, making sure that the unit has been calibrated to check ore samples.
As I said before, have an independant test done on it, as I have tested a meteorite on several Ace 250 units, and have had no problem detecting them.
Hope you here from Mary shortly,
Regards,
Phil (GMC)

Hi again azdigger,
I already have had a reply back from Mary at Garrett. They haven't received any emails from you as yet. She said that she will try and contact you through this forum if possible.
If you want to send me your email address, I will forward it to her.
Please send details to me at mail@goldminingcentre.com.au so I can forward.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Regards,
Phil

Thanks Phil, I have had others check out my meteor.....I have attended several outings at Franconia AZ looking for meteors and there have been some of the top folks in the state there.
I will wait for an answer from Garrett and see what happens.

azdigger... I'm sure you are familiar with "Lunk" who posts on Chris
Gholson's forum. Lunk has found many meteorites (Fransconia); unfortunately I do not have one to air test against my 250.

Also, I have on and off known Mary for over 25 years. She has came
up through the ranks because of her great ability. She is swamped by e-mails asking many different questions.

Do not rush out and buy a detector. Even the "best" may not be the best for meteorite hunting. Research!

:yo:

i tried to upload a pic of a rock i found on sat. im not sure what it is. im hearing that it might be magnitite. ill try the pic again after work:yo:

I had an email from Mary this morning.
They have checked their previous emails to see what they have received.
This is what they have found and I will quote Mary's email.
"" We found an email that was sent to sales@garrett.com on 9-8-06. He was asking about the Ace 250 and meteors. We answered him on 9-11-06. I am going to send this fellow an email hoping it is the same person. ""
Just in case it wasn't your email, can you send me your email address so as I can forward it on to Mary so she can contact you.
All the best.
Phil

Parrot, I had "Paleface and John B " from the forums and even Bill Southern verify that this is indeed a meteor. But I thanks you for the info

I got am email from Mary today, I sent her one back. I am gonna get my Dad's Garrett and see if it will pick up this meteor.
Thanks to all who have helped or tried to help, it is nice to belong to a group that can and will help a member if the are able.

Azdigger... thanks for the reply. They are all experts. I sure do not doubt their knowledge, anyone of them knows far more than I ever will. However, sometimes there can be a mixup in the rocks, just be sure it is the correct one and not another (Just a mixup).

Incidentally, (since this is a Garrett forum),the older Garretts, VLF/TR such as the A2B, or A3B, may be another choice. You can spend a few hundred up to many thousands of dollars. There are many VLF-types as well as PI-types... and many different choices of coils!

You need to go to Bills meteorite forum and ask those that are successfully finding the Irons and the Chondrites. The right choice
for the particular "Job." Again, I suggest "Research!"

The better the detector "hits" the so called "hot rocks," the better the chances for a meteorite. True all -metal with no built in discimination (and be careful of a faster autotune or SAT). Keep in mind you are not looking for gold... the more "hot rocks" the better.

Good, because I got an email from her and she hadn't heard from you yet and was wondering what address you were using.

Bill

Mary said she never heard from you but you had sent an email to sales. That ain't Mary. Her email is maryp@garrett.com
