One thing on here or any forums that i have looked at so far, is that no one has talked about finding meteorites. I was just wondering if anyone has found any with there detector. Ive heard they can be worth some money.

[size=medium]from what i've seen on t.v. shows about this subject is that it's too regulated to bother about for the money you might get in return. need hard to get permits and the gov't tells you when and how long you can hunt. it has it's followers but a small crowd compared to other treasure hunts. jmho

Odd i knew one of the guys out at Doc's Detectors in Vegas that used to hunt them with an Explorer. He never mentioned a lot of red tap. But then moonshiners dont mention the red tap either

First detector i bought was a Bounty hunter quicksilver at Cabelas for $ 150 just to try out the hobby and by the third hunt i fount 2 meteories about a bought a foot from each other, I could not beleive it my heart was beating 100 mph sure enough i took them to a guy that specialized in meteorites and he said congratulations you have authentic meteorites i was siked i was all proud showing my 2 rocks to everyone. I holded on to them for almost 2 years and miss placed them for a bout a week so i ended up selling them to a pawn shop. Combined weight was about 40 grams he ended up giving me $ 240 i was happy. I found these rocks a local park in Colorado. So yes there is money to be made finding these alien rocks. I joind a local metal detecting club in California and asked if anyone was into finding meteorites most members were not intrested in finding meteorites so to my knowledge i didnt think people where to hyped about finding meteorites . Just keep in mind how old the earth is and how long has stuff been falling down from outer space. So these rocks are everywhere just got to be lucky i guess. So there you go my freind that is my story.

Meteorite hunting is like gold hunting if you want to increase your chance of finding them .... you go where you know they have been found. Might be one of the reasons you mentioned red tap. OR.... you can do the take your detector for a walk thing and LUCK into one. They arent as everywhere as you think.

I remember reading somewhere that the federal government has issued new regs (new policy?) on meteorite hunting on federal land, in the last year I think. Because the feds own so much land in the prime hunting areas (western US), this affects a lot of meteorite hunters. In my area it's not practical to hunt for them, unless you knew a spot where some landed.

How is some federale gonna know that you are hunting meteorites if you are just out there swinging a coil? Or does this red tape of which you speak apply to all metal detecting on CITIZEN OWNED land?
