METEORITE !!!!

Wasn't sure where to post this so I selected this forum...

Found this last week in a farm pasture..2 feet down..hard digging...any idea what type it is ???

Have an expert check it... they can tell if it's from this world or not. I've found 2 or 3 rocks like that one that turned out to be Hematite or some kind of iron ore. Take care and HH, Mike.

Certain types of meteorites (palisites?) are worth more than gold.
They have iron mixed with translucent rocks and look pretty when sliced.
Usually if there is one, there are more in the spot you found it.

Have someone who knows check it out. To see if its the real thing,
they cut off a small slice, etch the surface with acid, and see if
a crystline structure emerges. If so, the only place that could occur is from re-entry into the earths atmosphere AKA meteorite.

I did just that...took it to the Ft Worth Museum of Science and the scientist that looked at it said it was definitely a meteorite ....very heavy...he wanted to cut it up to do chemical analysis..i wouldnt let him..because of the cost of the testing and cuz I've heard many stories that when you cut em up it ruins the value of the find. After thoughts and hindsight says I should have done it but he wouldnt give me a cost for the testing..so I declined. anyone have any other sources that me be possible ...

Just make sure that when you do have it tested it never leaves your sight. Scientists, especially ones at museums and universities have the unique ability to lose track of such things. I have heard some horror stories from people that have made some nice finds to never see them again.

Hey nice find. Check on the Discovery Channel under the new show Cash and Treasure. They just did a show on Meteorite hunting and may have some links or other info. I know they have a crew blog.

Good luck!
