Metal detectors and dirt roads

bulkness

New member
I spend a lot of time on an ATV on dirt roads and trails in the spring, summer and fall. Had my new sovereign stolen last month so I am looking at a new detector. Should I be looking at one of the water sealed detectors or do you think one of the unsealed units like the sovereign would work?

Maybe ask the thief what he prefers?:laugh:... What exactly are you asking?

Most old dirt roads USED to be ridden by horse, so you are thinking right about the possibilities of old coins or finds. If you sort of look at the topography of the place for a likely spot to stop and camp, water a horse, or rest, then check it out with the detector to verify your thoughts. If you find old shotgun shells it sort of gives you an idea of age of the activity through there. I look for BIG old trees and hunt under them, especially oaks where some squirrel hunting may have taken place...usually on the east side of the tree is where a fellow sets up of a morning to shoot at a squirrel and there will be shotgun shells in there. I once found an old metal cigar tin with 7 wheat pennies in it buried at the base of an old oak, like maybe some kids treasure chest or something. Sorry to hear about your sovereign...maybe the atPro would suit your kind of hunting desire? Its all terrain and waterproof, and priced right.

Been there with firearms out here in the desert southwest where it has to be the worst. In my Rhino I've tried every method of dust abatement and running from it with no windshield is the only answer---you nearly need oxygen when you finally do stop!!! One of the ATs might be a good choice or you might try a padded bow case/bag which is what I haul my etrac around in. White's and Fishers don't seem to take shock very well.
