Metal Detector ID question

Marc in Bavaria

New member
Maybe one of you can help me with this question. In 1983, I was 11 years old and my grandmother bought me my first metal detector. It was used then so I don't know how old it was. I can no longer remember anything about it except what it looked like and thought one of you may know what kind it was and possibly have a picture of it. I am thinking it was a White's because it had a large blue control box, no meter, aluminum shaft, and a white solid round white coil. But, as I remember, the handle was somewhat ergonomic, not the straight ones normally seen on the old White's units. I have never seen another one like it.

Thanks for the help.

Well, after some on-line digging, I think I have found the model detector I had in 1983. It must have been a White's Coinmaster model 1 am but I am still unable to find a decent photo of it to know for sure. Does anyone know anything about this unit?

if it had a handle similar to the one you show, it would date to the late '60s or early '70s. Possibly early '70s and was either a standard TR, or possibly a TR-Discriminate model.

Thanks for the info, I found the photo on-line and can't really see the handle very well. I think it's pretty close. Were there perhaps accessory handles or after-market handles back then?

You might try contacting White's in Sweethome, Or. They have a nice museum there. They probably have the model you are looking for. They are really helpful. I came across an old White's Buccaneer BFO machine a while back. They sent me the manual and the orginal sales sheet. It has a light blue case and a curved gold shaft. I can send you a photo if you would like it.

The catch 22 is..... in 1983,,,, it could have been any model from the 60's til 83.... and it could have been modified by anyone.... for whatever reason.... whith what ever was avilable to that point in time ....
1983 was that crossover time frame where the industry was changing towards smaller ... lighter... more ergonomically balanced detectors.... a former owner may have been experimenting.... before you had hands on the detector.... that being the case.... your memory would be correct.... humans have been retrofitting since we first hit two rocks together:bouncy:
