Metal Detector for youngins

Mezrein

New member
Hey all,
My 9 year old son really wants to go metal detecting with me, and he does come along but I know what he really wants is to swing a detector of his own with me. I have my F5, which is a bit too bulky for him, and I also have a goldbug 2 which, lets face it, awesome detector but not for what we're doin. So I want to get him one, something simple, and something that will hit 3 to 4 inches without an issue. I don't want to spend a ton for obvious reasons, and it needs to be able to shrink down enough for a small person. :)

Let the suggestions and reasons behind the suggestions roll in. :)
Thanks

There's a Bounty Hunter Junior detector that is cheap and simple but should work okay (as always you pretty much get what you pay for). Garrett Ace 150 (or 250) should work too, you need to be about 140 cm (4

Tesoro Compadre - no display, but good beep and dig performance, lifetime warranty and light and easy to use.

Then buy a new rod when you sell or move up in height

The Fisher F2 is also a good one to consider.

I just want to make sure that its something that he can turn on and go with. I do want the VID however. With his age I want him to be able to see what the metal detector is telling him. If he was a bit older, in the 14 to 18 range then I'd go with the tesoro since I learned on a TID machine myself.

I understand where you're coming from on the VID (sorta) I have both types of detectors and I'm REALLY GLAD that I put in some years with beep and dig machines first. I've retrieved a number of good targets when using ID machines because what the audio was telling me prompted me to dig when the ID was telling me "junk". On most solid clean hits I don't bother to look because I've gotten to where the audible signal is enough to prompt me to dig. With my beep and dig detectors between the tone and thumbing the discrimination I can determine whether a target is likely a coin or trash most of the time. I won't say I'm 100% accurate, but then neither is the VID lol. Ultimately, our eyes are the only sure VID.

Ive know a few people who buy there kids a machine. What i tell them is look for one that has a discriminator. Kids hate digging pull tab after pull tab or wads of foil.... and the ACE 250 loves both. For them... finding something means coins. There sense of value at first is money not unique things we find interesting. Once they get past the clad thing... like most of us do, then they are ready to compare finds with dad and learn what really makes detecting fun. Just be glad you have one willing to get out doors now days.... so keep it interesting. Pick locations you know will produce for him. Visual may be important..... but can be discouraging if its constantly wrong. Most Bounty Hunter do get the depth you want and a reasonable price. This may be a phase you dont want to invest a lot in yet.

Bill is right on target to suggest the Compadre ! Just don't be to surprized when the youngun smokes your butt real good now and then! That WILL happen, and if y'all hunt together enough, it will happen frequently. HH Charlie

Yeah- I got mine for my second childhood. Set the disc. right at the "f" in foil to start out with. The most important thing to remember is not to take it away from him after you see all his finds.

Might as well put my 1/2 cent in. The White's coin master pretty easy machine and small rod for kids. I thought they had the prizms also but now I see on the web site only 5g and 6t. Anyway I let my great grandson use mine when we go hunting. In a few minutes he is off chasing seagulls or looking at all the wonders on the beach that a little kid can see and investigate. Thanks for reading.....Z

The Bounty Hunter Discovery 3300 Disc 33 is a model specifically sized for youngsters. Can be gotten for about $238.00 on the Bay........from a authorized dealer.......and its a pretty good little machine. Has everything you are asking for. 5 year warranty if bought from authorizzed dealer. PM if interested and I'll see if I still got the name of seller.

I'd say Bounty Hunter Tracker IV , it is a sensitive machine , it has SENS and DISC knobs , it's only $99 and it can go 4 inches easy . However , it does not have the VID you were looking for it just has a sweep arm gauge . The sweep arm gauge itself just shows the strength of the target I believe . I have never used one but I have heard Lot's of good things about it , and some people say they would never get rid of the thing , because they value it so much . I have a Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II by the way , and I love it.

The stem adjusts to really short or really long .

Hope this helps .

I think the Fisher F-2 is a great detector for the money and if he really likes hunting and sticks with it, he'll not out grow it anytime soon.

I use to use a tracker II myself, does the 4 have a pinpoint button?

No , the Tracker IV does not have a pinpoint button , however, along with the SENS and the DISC nobs it has another switch that is marked "DISC" , "ALL METAL" and "TONE" . I have never personally used the thing but in the Bounty Hunter forum people have praised the thing for being very sensitive , and say they would never part with it , even know it is only a $99 machine . I am going to probably get one myself , however , I would also like a Tesoro Compadre , which I have never used either , but I hear it is very sensitive . The Tracker IV is basically BEEP AND DIG . I've seen it go for cheaper than $99 . Heck ,for that much , and , the good reviews I have heard about it , you can't go wrong .

I forgot to say one more thing . I have never used a machine with a pinpoint button , but I would like to try one , because it looks VERY handy . If you don't mind X'ing then a $99 beep and dig is pretty affordable . Don't get a kiddy machine they are just a novelty in my opinion , I saw a guy playing with his 4 yr old's kiddy machine on You tube and it wasn't doing anything , they might beep at something on the surface but that's about it , and I have watched Lot's of his videos and he usually uses a Minelab Etrac , and his wife uses a Tesoro Compadre , so he knows his machines , and , he Say's the Compadre is an excellent playground machine like in tot lots and sand boxes like a volleyball court . The compadre has no pinpoint either , but the coil is only like 5.25 inches across so the area is so small it should be no problem X'ing and zeroing in on your target . A compadre will run about $160 , try INDIAN NATIONS DETECTORS , they have a good payment plan .

The Fisher F2 looks very good also , they look very sensitive and they have a pinpoint button I believe and a VDI readout I think , or it might be a depth readout , I can't remember , it has two big numbers in the middle of the screen though. And the F2 looks like it is really easy to choose which mode you want to be in and which metals you would like to discriminate out and which you would like to keep , right there on the screen . I wouldn't mind picking up a F2 also . The F2's run about $199 . You could get one on INDIAN NATIONS DETECTORS easy , with their payment plan .

I just don't have that much cash usually so I get the least expensive I can find , but still making sure the machine is sensitive . The tesoro compadre operates at 12kHz which is VERY sensitive by the way , more sensitive than the Tracker IV and the F2 .

OK , I will shut up now .
