Metal detecting terminology?

In2Deep

New member
Being a computer geek / retired web developer, I am into acronyms...

Now... Being new to detecting, I see terms that I dont understand and have to read about. I thought it would be cool if we could start a thread and you ole pro's could explain some terminology for us new guys. Or even acronyms would be great to...

A funny one for me is... SEF, That is my niche in the real world.. Search Engine Friendly... Something that findmall is not :) haha.. No offense to the admins..
But SEF means something different when it comes to coils. I guess I could google it and look, but I thought it would be fun to start a thread and have some others post detecting terminology so newbees like myself get it.

Seriously though, What do you call it when you dig a hole and nothing is there? If i was fishing I would call it skunked.

So i would love it if you old timers could break out your reading glasses and educate me on terminology :clapping:

SEF--Symetrical Electromagnetic Field--------Hole with nothing there--"ghost hole or "dry hole"-got another name or two I call 'em but I better not mention it here.

What do you call it when you dig a hole and nothing is there?

"No Joy" or "Ghost Hole"

Hunting small hard to reach places with a small coil.

"Sniping"

Hunting somewhere and only digging the obviously good signals.

"Cherry Picking"

A normal day!!!

HAHA! a normal day, thats the funniest thing I read yet on findmall!

This morning I went out for a bit before it got hot, got a tone on something that I had not heard before, it was to the left of the screen but still within the white. I cut my plug and dug about to my elbow and decided to bag it... It was still faint and way down there.. So I guess that was a normal day :clapping:

hmmm.. Cherry picking.. That has been me the last couple days cause its been hot and being new to it, I only wanna dig the ones that I know are for real

In2Deep,

We have been pretty stymied on getting out here in the Burg. First was the Amazonian rainy season turning everything into sticky, soupy mud. Now everything is either in crops (sorry, no hunting allowed) or field grass over the knee and you need to attach a scythe to your coil to be able to swing the machine.

The only relic hunting I got to do in the last two weeks was this weekend's relic show in town where I picked up a really nice 1861 dated Ames Model 1840 Artillery Saber.

Later,
Tom Henrique

Hope you all who are digging where it's hot and dry are not doing it in a park or school ground. Your plug in dry griund will die, unless you water it after digging. Kill the grass in nice little plugs all over the area and detecting will get booted out. It's dry here too and I went out and only carried a 6" probe, no Lesche onboard, and worked the shallower signals. It was still fun and I got quite a few coins. A friend has some super long needle nose and has ground out the center area where it hinges so he can put it down into the ground and close it, without the dirt jamming the hinge area and preventing it from closing. We all might want to consider benning ourselves from plugs unless the weather and ground conditions will alleviate killing the grass. Jim.

We have only grass the color of hay here in south Texas. The city allows watering once a week and at a certain time.

Yep ... ya cant kill that which is already dead.
Problem is not the grass.
Here you need a pick ax to dig in this hot baked cleatchie.

Grass is pretty much dead here to.. At the school where I go detecting they have sprinklers and keep it pretty much green. I guess its safe to say the grass is dead for anyone that does not water their lawn. They say for us to water the lawn because of fire danger with forest fires, then we get in &$@! for using to much water.. its like a vicious circle :D

I just choose to let our yard dry out and not water it.. If we dont water it for hours everyday its pointless.
