Old yards are good to hunt. It is where I began. You can find a good variety of stuff including coins, jewelry, old toys, fobs, and tokens. The best yards to hunt are the old ones. It is best to hunt them in the winter when the grass is dead, you need to use a hand digger, dig neat plugs, and replace the plugs neatly. Hit up all of your relatives, friends, and co-workers that have old houses. After that you can knock on doors and get permission to hunt people's yards. When their neighbors see you it is even easier to get permission to hunt their yards too.

If I were pretty new to the hobby (which is a guess on my part due to your post), and looking to expand my horizons, I'd be sure I was good at recovering targets without leaving a trace of having been there (where it matters, such as manicured lawns). One doesn't have to look (read) long to realize that's one of the largest pet-peeves of most MDers because it causes landowners to refuse permission to hunt their properties, and they'll tell their neighbors as well. We've all seen or read about another MDer finding unfilled and butchered-up holes in parks, and other public areas, be sure you're not one of them. So I'd suggest being sure you have mastered the retrieval process 1st.

Without having an idea where you're located, look at old plat maps of your area. Find/read the MDers Code of Ethics (another good starting point if you haven't already. Also, be sure you inform the landowner you'll remove all the trash you dig, and explain that includes sharp cans, metal pieces, broken bottles, and an endless number of items which could damage their mower blades, or bare feet.

That's good info Gratcote. My wife has secured many sites for me. Whenever she's at an older friends house she says "my husband would love to run his metal detector over here" Usually the answer is "anytime" Now I have hunted several church yards simply by asking. If nobody's in the church then go to the parsonage to seek permission. No matter where you hunt always write down the name and number of the person that granted you permission. It's 100 times better to say "Charles Garrett said it was OK - Here's his number"

Anyplace people congregate for any reason is a potential site. Just think of how many of these places exist or did exist.. You are not relegated to specific sites unless they are posted. Use your imagination.

Bill.
