Metal Detecting Settings

Elton

New member
For all newbies and persons with a new detector.

I have found over the years that settings are specific to areas of detecting.....

Yes it is helpful to have others give you their settings..... but only to a point.

Your area makes the difference and you MUST figure out which settings work best for you, and your area.

Use the factory presets initially, get the feel of the detector in your specific area. After learning the detector, then and only then, start making adjustments to see if performance is actually better.
Sometimes it is worse... If you do not know the abilities of the factory preset you have nothing to compare to...

Your prior model detectors performance is of little use. Unless of course you bought a NEW same model detector.

Make your suggested from others adjustments and see how it performs... Then and only then will you be able to determine if some settings help or hinder your detectors ability to work in your area.. It is rare unless their in the same area as you that their settings will be perfect for you..

A good post Elton....It's amazing how many detectorists still ask for the "best" gold settings, or the best silver, relic, coin etc; settings. I don't criticize them because I was once a newbie myself and wanted to get to the good stuff asap. You cannot short cut doing the homework on metal detecting and we all must dig the pulltabs and other trash that comes from getting gold rings and nickels! Same with all the other coin targets. Trash and treasure go together!
There really is no substitute for reading and learning and practicing and testing the stuff you learn with this great hobby and actually, that's a good part of the fun we experience. BTW, I AM STILL LEARNING!!!!

All I would add is that conditions can change from day to day as well. Moisture matters a Lot imo.

Good point Elton, There's lots of variables between machines, ground etc. Newbies should be reminded also that it's not always best to run full bore on the senstivity, especially in heavy trash, competeing with electrical interference or difficult mineralization.
