Metal Detecting on Community College Propety

I live very close to a local community college that sits very close to a protected civil war battlefield. My question is..has anyone used their detector on community college grounds? I'm certainly not going to detect next to the front door, but there are a few acres of maintained fields behind the school that doesn't appear to be used for anything other than a buffer between the school and the highway. I have searched the internet for an answer, and I find no information on this topic.

(I know this isn't the proper forum for this question, but I didn't know which forum to post this in.)

Sounds like a great place to detect...But best to have permission I might try to get it from one of the groundskeepers...they may be easier to talk to than administration.

Call the college maintenance department or watch for someone cutting the grass. Get the name and phone number of who gives you permission in case security harasses you.

I've never been hassled when I get out early on a Sunday. It seems everyone is at ease. I've had the police and security pull up and ask "find anything good"?

I worked years ago in senior management for a CC. I would suggest going out on weekends and holidays. The campus should be a ghost town then. Of course, check-in with campus police who are often easy going so long as you can demonstrate that you are not leaving "bomb craters" in their sod. Proper plugging will help you stay there, poor digging technique I guarantee will get you booted.

In my experience there are many self appointed "officials" on campus, so be advised that you run into a great deal of interference if you go when the campus is active. That is why I suggest going when there is a relatively low activity level. Some of the busy bodies will make it their mission to cause you grief, but you can't get them to do their actual job with a cattle prod! LOL Sorry about the attitude, but it is a sore subject for me, and it reminds me of the many handfuls of my own hair I tore out trying to do the right thing. I survived 3 years and then had to get away back to the private sector due to the politics and pettiness in public higher education. Way too many self appointed chiefs amongst all the Indians LOL!

Good luck and happy digs.

Erick, please let us know how you do. I have a few colleges I would like to detect. Will you be looking strictly for civil war stuff or coins as well?

I do the same for towns, counties and all schools. Get good response. All land is owned by someone. Always ask or check first. You don't loose anything if you do. If you don't you could get your worst nightmare.
