Metal detecting In Mexico!

Circle C Digger

New member
Has anyone metal detected in Mexico? I am going to Playa Del Carmen in January, which is South of Cancun. Sure would like to detect in the beaches if it is allowed. I just do not want to be hassled by the police.

Any comments would be appreciated.

You might want to check to make sure nothing has changed. Nancy and I went to that very same place, well about a mile south of Playa Del Carmen, a couple of years ago. We stayed at the Rio complexes. We were told that all beaches belonged to the government and MD'ing was allowed on the beaches. Inland hunting is a different story. We had no problems with customs and took our detectors as carry-on. The military does patrol the beaches for drug traffic and I encountered four of them with Uzi's one morning. They waived me over to them and all they wanted to know was how deep my Beachhunter ID went. We hunted early in the morning and later in the afternoon, pretty busy beaches during the day. Lots of stuff to find there, you will stay busy with just the daily losses of coins and jewelry. This is a picture of my finds and Nancy found about the same. I found and returned to owners two rings that were in the same wedding party. A guy lost his Harley ring playing volleyball and I found it for him and later that night his nephew lost his wedding present ring and was very upset. The Harley guy found me again and asked for another favor. As you can see, both were all smiles. The hotel was happy to get the keys and dinnerware back and the Peso's were spent on tips and a round of drinks for our friends and ourselves. A great vacation was had by all...........YEA, take your detector and have fun.

Thanks for the input. I will call the Hotel I'm staying at and double check with them. Now I just need to figure out which detector to use and what do Mexican coins register on the scale. I have an XL Pro and a Quattro.

I took the Beachhunter ID hoping to do some water hunting but the surf was too rough. Settled for dry sand hunting. Some of the foreign coins will read down into the iron range but I can't tell you how far into the iron though. Keep in mind that platinum and small gold jewelry will also read close to iron as well. You might want to go to the Beach and Water Detecting forum and ask some questions too.
