Metal Detecting in Cayman Islands?

Barry NY

Member
cannot find out any information about MD in the Cayman Islands - does anyone have any knowledge or can point me in the right direction.
thanks.

one thing I've heard is that there coins have more aluminum in them, so much differnt than ours. Also, few steady locals that work the cruise boat beaches and sting ray city, but they keep it quiet.

Three of us are headed to the Grand Cayman this weekend to metal detect. I'll let you know when we get back! :detecting:

Well........we made a fast and furious trip to the Cayman Island and back. First suggestion..........if you plan a trip to the Cayman, be sure and allow at least 2 to 3 days to detect. Seven Mile Beach is way too much beach to try and hunt in one day! There are a couple of public swim areas to hit and where the cruise ships come in should be a good spot. We didn't find out about the cruise ship location until our day was about over.
I was disappointed in the fact that there was so much rock in the water. It was almost impossible to scoop out any targets. I had many good signals that I could never recover due to the hard rock bottom. A local told us that most people that hunt for treasure in the water use mask and snorkels to dive down and fan the sand away to pick the treasure up out of the rocks.

We found only one silver ring, coins and a "LOT" of bottle caps and trash in the dry sand. The coins were 70% USA and 30% Cayman. I did find a Carnival Cruise Ship token which was pretty neat.

Would I go back...........? Only if I had more time to hunt at a slower pace. We started hunting at 6:00 AM and stopped at 6:00 PM. That is too much for an old guy like me! I'm sure the gold is there..........we just didn't get our coils over any.

I found about 100 caman dollars on the bottom (about 6 ft of water) at the beach of the hotel I was staying at.
I accused the hotel of putting it there to attract customers. LOL
I always wanted to return with a metal detector and my dive gear and do exactly that ... fan for the gold.
