The question of the various mexican and carribean beach destinations comes up frequently. And the answer usually is that there is no problems. However, Barbados is an independant country, so "norms" for all the other such toursist destinations down there do not necessarily mean that Barbados is the same. But I would guess that any place that seeks american tourist dollars, is thus friendly and on par with the norms of all such other destinations.
The knee-jerk reaction might be to inquire ahead with a consulate, lawyer, border bureaucrat, etc... right? Afterall, you "
can't be too safe", right? But strangely, here's what has happened over the years, when people have done just that: They have asked persons, with the right buzz-words, and gotten a "no". So they leave the detectors at home. Imagine their surprise when they arrive, and see others carefree on the beach detecting, and no one cares.
For example: Back in the early 1980s, Fisher Co. had a mailer/periodical. In it, there was a Q&A column, where readers could send in their questions to the editor. In one issue, the question appeared "
Is metal detecting legal in Mexico?" (the reader was getting ready to vacation down there, and wanted to know ahead of time). Fisher's answer to the reader was "no", and went on to detail dire sounding warnings. However, in the NEXT edition of this periodical, several readers had written in to take exception to Fisher's answer. They asked "since when?" and "who told you this?", etc... Saying they'd gone for years up till then, and never had a problem. In fact, detectors are a common site on tourist beaches, so how could Fisher come up with this answer?
Fisher, in defense of their earlier answer, explained that upon receiving the other readers inquiry, had merely gone, .... and ASKED. And who better to ask than Mexico themselves, right? So they'd inquried of some border bureucrat consulate type, and merely reported to the readers what they were told. But you can imagine, that whomever fields such a question, might simply have morphed the question in terms of federal antiquities stuff, or shipwreck salvor type laws, or exporting gold bars stuff, etc.... I mean, so too might you get the same answer if you asked certain bureaucrats or archies in the USA too, because they couch your question in terms of ARPA, or whatever.
All major MD manufacturers, has distributors/dealers down in Mexico, including Fisher! Doh. You might check to see if there are dealers on that island. If there is, then presto, it must not be disallowed, eh?
