Metal detecting as a business?

Just curious....I was thinking it would be a good idea to start up a small business of finding things people have lost. I know of many people who have lost a valuable ring or other item. Of course with gas prices it would have to be in your general area, but with the price of gold these days it may be worth it to the person who lost the item, to give you a nice chunk of change for finding it for them. In order for you to even think about doing it, the person would have to know the general area in which they lost the item..not just say "my yard somewhere". Has anyone ever thought about doing this, or maybe someone is doing it, and want to share if it is worth it or not? Someone may say I will give you $300 for finding my $2000 ring or something, and many people may even give a bit in gas money if they think you may find this for them. It may be worth it! What do you think?

it has been discussed here a few times before and I have seen the experienced guys always say, get some experience under your belt first before you think about it.

Been detecting thirtry years. I think most of us thought that at the beginning. Sure would hate for my bills and living expenses depended on what I found......Jack

Maybe if you lived within a few miles of busy beach and you had it all to yourself. I treat my hobby like a business and keep track of profit and loss only because I think it's interesting. I put all my MD dough in the bank and in 14 months of keeping track have made just over $2400 and I try to hutn 4-5 times a week. Next year I am going to start deducting all MD expenses from my finds, most will be transportation I assume, and we'll see what happens.

Having fun is the reward. You can make decent money compared to golfing, boating, and many other hobbies.

Well, I already own my own business from home so I would'nt be doing it for the money really, mostly because I think it would be cool to see the persons face if you did find a valuable item they lost. Another cool thing would be you already know there is really something there! Everything I find is going in a jar and used for a downpayment on a fifth wheel in a few years. I mostly detect on camping trips, so $200-$300 a month extra would be cool!

just a funny story..my wife has been teasing me lately because I go metal detecting and bring back mostly trash, while the other day she went shopping and found a gold ring in the fresh beans bin at meijers. I made her throw it in the jar.

Nice story. Oops, gotta go. I'm heading to the supermarket to :detecting: the bean bin

Metal detecting will keep you in the poor house unless you find a gold bar once a month.:sadwalk:

I think you will be spending a lot of time waiting for the phone to ring.....You might be better off sending letters to insurance companies and hoping they might strum up some business for some high end lost objects. At least they will readily cover your expenses. I have made more money searching for missing through them then I have doing personal calls.

One could contract out to small Police Departments who don't have their own detection equipment for finding evidence.

I've been detecting for over 35 years. To me its a hobby and if I am asked to find something for someone I doit for whatever change i recover.Helps pay for the batteries and some gas. Of course if you are digging up lots of gold coins then it might pay to go into business. I love the excitement of of digging the unknown and the fresh air. But then to each his own. keep swinging good luck.
