I will say the snake was a willing participate in the photo shoot and was still as can be. After arriving at home I realized I had my camera settings on the lowest setting. (Canon PowerShot S2 IS) 640x480 / Normal.

Is the snake in the process of shredding it's skin? I seldom mess with snakes, never have, but some are beautiful creatures. Thanks for sharing. Kelley (Texas) :)

Good question Kelley. I am not sure but the snake was very nice about letting me get close to him. I stomped me feet on the ground near him and didn't even flinch. I did this as I wanted to see how "active" the snake was. I then sat down approx. 5 feet away and took several pictures. Towards the end of taking pictures, I threw a little twig on top of him and then he decided to prop his head up. That is the pic on the right. They are wonderful and amazing creatures. Here is a picture of a black snake. He must be close to five feet long. This guy was sleeping on a closed-off road in a CT state park. I wanted the snake to stretch out for me....so I found a long, thin tree branch and "tickled" him around mid-body. Then he started slithering away and that is when I took this picture. Don't get me wrong as I am not out to antagonize snakes. It is just sometimes I would like to get a nice picture of them. I assess the situation and If I see that it is going to get ugly, or the hostility of the snake rear up - I am out of there. I keep plenty of room between myself and snakes. Most snakes are looking for an escape route and with a tree branch or twig touching they sense this as a nuisance and move on. Me on the other hand, they would hang out and snack on me for a while lol

We have a black colored snake down here called a Black Racer...they are fast. They look similar to the snake in your picture, but are just a tab slimmer. Thanks for posting the snake pictures, interesting subject. Kelley (Texas) :)

Thank you Roscue. I was shocked it came out as good as it did. Anytime I use zoom on this camera the pictures come out blurry.

Kelley, I looked up info on your black racer. That is quite the snake and grow just as large!

That snake looks similar to a water moccasin (maybe not as stocky looking). Looks like he just finished a meal as well (the lump in the first pic thats closest to the camera), why he probably wasnt active. Brave on throwing a stick at it  worth it for the shot. Beautiful snake.

You might be right Brad as this pond is very active with wildlife including tons of chipmunks and field mice. I assessed the snake situation and realize the pond turtle was moving faster than this guy lol
