Met a fellow dirt digger yesterday

Well-known member
I finally made it back to the river and found hardly anything until I started across the park to talk to a neighbor about a propeller I found. Saw this man and his wife and little girl and didn't pay much attention and another couple were fishing off one of the docks. Then I heard the sound of his detector and he was using a Tesoro and found a token and lots of trash Iike I was doing. I didn't find any token but a small ear ring with no markings and when I headed across the length of the swim area to talk to a neighbor, I found a coin spill and recovered 4 coins. The man with the detector came over and I introduced myself and he works local. By the time I talked to the man next to the park, I was too tired to get back into the water and only got about 2 hours detecting. Found 2 more lures and got the treble hook from the little cleo spoon caught in my scoop and the hardware cloth and pulled it loose from the lure. Enjoyed myself but really wanted to spend more time detecting. Saw two long lines of geese in formation and talking to each other and I'm always amazed at what God provides to inspire awe and wonder in our lives. Found the second 1965 quarter and I must be getting close to silver, but not yet. Usually when I find a coin spill, I work around the compass in a square and usually find some jewelry, but got in too much of a hurry yesterday. That sounds crazy I guess saying I work around a round compass in a square, but what it means in my little way is I work east-south-west and north of the coin spill and most times I find something. Hope I can get back next week, but since I have to cook for the entire clan, it's doubtful. GL & HH.

Yeah, that happens...folks get to talking and you dont get to hunting!:sadwalk: I had a guy come up to me this am, he was wearing a tool belt and obviously in process of working on his house...I dont know if he was just curious or what...I told him what I was fixing to do, (suit up and go hunt) and then asked him if he needed a hand with anything heavy I could help him with before I put my waders on? He said, "No, the Wife is here with me" I try to avoid people if I can, especially when I'm on the hunt...I hear you about working a circle or some sort of logical method after getting a good ping...it pays off...geese are really cool...I have a theory that hummingbirds burrow down into their feathers right behind their neck between their wings to hitch a ride on them as they travel South or North...I cant see how a hummingbird can make such a long journey otherwise, beating their little wings for a thousand miles with no flowers in between to refuel at?...When all the geese heading that way it would be easy for them to hitch a ride on right? If I was a hummingbird, thats what I'd do!:lmfao:
Mud

Those hummingbirds might have to dodge some incoming shotgun pellets, Mud. I got 10 lbs of pig leaf fat coming tomorrow to render for lard, but would love to have some geese fat. Their fat tastes so good, they have been likened to pigs with wings. lol
I enjoyed meeting this gentleman and glad he believed in covering up his holes and carrying his trash out. Wish I would have had more time to detect, but the neighbor next door at the swim park kind of keeps and eye on me when he's home and I appreciate that. So, a little talking goes a long way. I honestly thought I would get to go back Sunday or Monday or even today, but no such luck. It would be wonderful to sneak out for a few hours tomorrow, but I may just have to wait until Saturday. I want to grid the shallows up to waist deep with the chest waders, then hit the deeper areas with my wetsuit. Those areas that are waist deep now were neck deep before the water was let down and it goes back up in about 2 weeks. The areas that are neck deep now were 3 feet over my head before the water was let down and I got a feeling I'm going to find something very old at this location, besides myself of course. HH.
A flock of geese stopped across from my house at a pond and were so loud the other day, I had to turn up the volume on my pc to hear the video I was watching.

Gutz to watch out for that flying geese grease me bouy. Glad you got out for a swish and met a fellow detectorist. Hoping the season is not over in your area so that you can get out a few more times!

People talking to you can be annoying; BUT, we are ambassadors of our metal detecting pastime. Deep inside I get annoyed if someone starts yakking about "what's your best find?" or "what are you looking for?", but, a mental pause helps me. Usually I focus on the trash I've found and the fact we are getting the Pb, Fe, Al, and steel out of the ground and recycled. It helps. I then ask if they know of older places, or talk about the history of the area, or just start talking to them. You can usually wrap-up the conversation at the appropriate time. A pain in the butt...yes...annoying...yes...but, IMHO, worth it to promote, not demote, metal detecting.

How cold is the water there, Fongu? I hope you stay safe and/or have someone with you, if you are going in neck deep water this time of year. But I hope you find something cool! Take a pic of the water you're hunting, if you can

Leslie, it was good to get out even for a little while. I detect all winter and the early spring and use the chest waders for shallow up to the waist and my new wetsuit for anything else.

ajaj, I don't mind talking even tho it probably sounded just like I did. I'm always pushed for time and don't get to detect very much and my detecting time is precious to me. Enjoyed meeting another dirt fisher.

dgruff, I don't know what the water temp is, but it's cold enough to give you hypothermia if you are not careful. Nothing like our northern members have to deal with and no ice, but as long as I dress appropiately, I feel safe. Here's some photos. All the holes were left by other detectorists and I covered them up. Found some more clad yesterday and assorted junk and bullets. Hope to get caught up and post my finds later this weekend. My internet connection was down from Wednesday until last night about 8 pm.
