Messing with Gain and Variability or Limits... or maybe Response?

Nick A

New member
I think my gain was set at 8. I lowered it to 7. My understanding is that gain makes weak signals louder. This sounds great, except my perception is that it makes loud signals louder as well.

Any ideas about how I can make that memorial penny at 1" less of a blast without sacrificing hearing the indian head at 8" a sweep away?

Also, I do not like that nickel hits are so much lower in tone. I'm used to ignoring low tones as iron after using a CZ for so long. I have to pay attention and listen. Would variability or limits help bring these tones up higher? I have found myself digging based on depth more than tone anyway. If it's on the conductive side, and more than halfway deep, I'll dig it, just to see what it is.

Maybe I want to change the Response setting to Long?

I guess I have read the manual but don't have a clear idea of how to get the results I want other than messing around with it a bunch.

Gain increases the sound of less audible sounds and doesnt increase those already loud. Another reason to be using a higher gain say on the beach or clean areas when looking for jewerly. I hunt at 6 just because i like the modulation and being able to tell the deeper targets by sound without looking at the screen. I wouldnt use anything but normal response unless you are in a lot of trash and move slowly... it takes a lot of getting used to and just isnt needed in clean areas. I hunt with my threshold tone at 9 everything elce is at 10 and nickels and dimes do sound better, especially silver. Test garden is your best best then play with your threshold tone that seems to be the key to telling the difference on deep tones. You have to tune it to your hearing.

You could also try adjustable headphones or just turn down your volume. The threshold has a bigger affect on your ability to hear those weak signals than your volume. A just audiable threshold is idea, for me its about 8. It also saves battery.

That way Iron will be a low tone all the time and everything else will be higher depending on how ferrous or non ferrous they are.
I hunt this way lots of times when I'm digging all kinds of targets and want to separate the iron from the non iron mainly.
But it's not the best way to pick out silver from trash.

Neals right about Ferrious sounds. Ive just always preferred it that i dont even think about it. My brain deals with high low tones better than all the bounce off the larger pieces of iron i tend to get in Cond sounds. Not sure what you ment by not the best way to pick out silver from trash thou Neal? Always looking for a better method, what ya got? With a smaller coil i still prefer the Ferrious sounds.
