Mesquite wood chip cooked turkey ....

Because this is the off year when our married kids are with the in/outlaws for Thanksgiving we had Thanksgiving dinner at the neighbors. They cooked a turkey in a propane deep fryer. His turkey was pretty good. A different taste from the traditional oven cooked bird with all the stuffing and trimmings.

A few days ago the perky Nancy "suggested" I try to cook a turkey on the grill while we were at the neighbors so we could have all the turkey leftovers we wanted over the weekend.

I've never cooked a turkey on the grill before so didn't know what to expect. Rather than use the gas grill, I fired up the Weber charcoal kettle grill. I like the flavor of the smoke from mesquite wood on steaks and chops so I threw some on top of the coals for the turkey.

When it was done we made the drippings into gravy while I was carving the bird. I liked it alot. The perky Nancy did not like the smoked taste so I have all the meat from a 14# bird to enjoy all by myself. I'll make a huge plate and give it to John SW Fla because he loves turkey.

Here is a photo of the bird right off the grill. Ummm, smells good.

... nasty looking stuff? And another plastic bag with a string in it. I guess it's legs are crossed and tied with the turkey "thong" to keep that turkey stuffing from getting lost / blowing out while cooking. What do you think? Going out today to Vernon via U.P.S. is the well cooked stuff (turkey stuffing) in the plastic bags. I heard Vernon would eat almost anything.
