Mega-feeder

The house I live in was originally a one room school house called Warren school. Built in 1842 it was operational for 115 years until it closed it's doors in 1957. Keeping with the tradition of the old school house I built this mega feeder as a christmas gift for my wife. It holds 40 pounds of seed, unfortunately with no nearby cover the birds are a little reluctant to feed from it.

Very nice job on the feeder!

Pretty cool. Very nice work.

That sucker is gorgeous. I didn't know birds like nearby cover. They're not visiting my feeder, so I will have to move it off my back deck and battle the squirrels. Last year I hung it from the middle of the clothes line and still the squirrels got to it by walking upside down along the clothesline.

Jabbo, Birds feeding in the open are vulnerable to attack from avian predators, aka, death from above. If you can find an old artificial christmas tree to put by it you can keep it where it is and it will put the feeding birds at ease. At least a little bit. I enjoy seeing the predator / prey interaction. It's been a month now and they're starting to come to it but they don't stay very long. Good luck keeping the squirrels away, they're a lot smarter than many people give them credit for, but hey, everybody's gotta eat.
