Medieval to Modern...

Bavaria Mike

New member
Saturday was by far the most beautiful day of the year so I was out and about. Stopped by a site that has some ruins to see if it is still there as it is 100 meters from a rock quarry and is doomed. Site is still accessible by 3 meters. Detected this site for hours a few years ago, only found a knife that is around 800 years old and a coin from 1851. I want to dig out part of this cellar hole and sift the dirt just for fun if I can make it in time. Chain link fence just right of the cellar hole.

There are several stone walls like this one attached to the cellar hole in the area.

A nice view of the quarry about to eat this site.

A warning sign, Blasting Area, with instructions on what to do if you are here and hear a horn blow, run for you life and take cover.

Another area I detected, found absolutely nothing here but trash, LOL!

Stopped by a church lane and dug some Euros lost from weddings then went to the castle for a few hours and found a lone Caltrop in nice condition. Probably the last hunt at the castle site as the weeds are growing fast.

A few relics, end stop for a knife from the early 1500s, religious pendant and a 1988 Spanish Peseta.

A seal matrix from the early to mid 1800s with initials H.I.? Hard to see but the dots after each initial still has red wax in them.

A tap valve, I believe 1600s with makers mark of a small bell and stem of the seal matrix.

Reverse of the coins.

An update on the museum display, they gave me a whole case to fill and want to use it as an advertisement for the museum. Here is another project I am working for the display, a large canon ball, about 10 pounds. There will be two canon balls in the display, one was shot from the castle and the other shot at the castle.

Thanks Mike , really like your work and i am so happy you can save such old relics before the quarry can destroy history.
Regards mark

Nice pictures . I can not imagine digging stuff that old.

Thanks for sharing Mike. Those are some awesome silver coins. Having enjoyed your posts for the past several years, I have to say "you are the KING of wax seals". How many have you found, over the years? HH Randy

I love the history you can dig up Mike! It's a shame that you are about to lose a spot though. Finds from the 1500's. Terrific. The oldest find I have had here in Australia, was a Chinese coin. The Emperor on it reigned from 1728 to around 1735, which means the coin is 60 years older than when white settlement first occurred in Australia. Found last year with the 70.

Very nice treasure finds so far, keep doing it more! A case to fill for the museum is a real good reason to find things. If you get stopped by the police or want to ask permission to use a metal detector somewhere then tell them you are doing it for the museum to fill a case there!

Sehr netter Schatz findet so weit, beh
