I want to do the very same as tomfg, and I did get globalmapper downloaded, but I read and read, and it seems (although I didn't understand a lot of it) to do a lot more than we are looking for. I didn't get to do any playing with the product, because I couldn't seem to connect with the Canadian sources after I got the program. I had my omputer in for repairs in the middle of this, and I think now it must be the rural phone lines, 56k connection that is my problem. Would it be possible to create a barebones product that just did what we need? I have a Garmin 12XL, should I be looking at OZZI program? Is that all we would need to accomplish our goal?

Are you looking to use older maps to find sites? OziExplorer is nice in that you can take any map, calibrate it with 2 or more positions, and be able to use it to find places on that map. Naturally, map scale and how many calibration points you use affect the accuracy. I have never used globalmapper so I don't know how it compares.

OziExplorer is probably going to be just what you are looking for. You also need to be able to upload/download waypoints to your GPS unit. I am not familiar with you model of Garmin so I thought I might mention that. Manybe someone can help you find some older canadian maps. You can even scan paper maps and use them.
