mding north shore ohau

wadeb

New member
making a trip to Ohau HI in March. Would it be wise to take excal to work the north shore beaches, will be there seven days visiting my daughter. They are surfers living the dream.

I haven't been in Hawaii since 1989 but some things have not changed. The North Shore can be EXTREMELY dangerous. I don't know you or your experience but this is not a joke nor am I being overly cautious. There are lots of other beaches to work that are protected and safe for people from the mainland to be very productive. If you have experience in ocean waters in the mainland it may not prepare you for the North Shore. There are some beaches on the north shore that are not as exposed to the big surf. You will really have to see the wave at the north shore no one can explain how huge it can get. I just re-read your remarks and I see that the people you are going to visit are surfers. If they have experience they will be able to advise you. If you are young and strong and scuba certified there is a huge rock that people jump off of that NEEDS someone with a md to work near that rock. It is located not far from Kaneohe, that's a town on that side of the island. I just can't remember the beach.

If at all possible get to the Big Island and go up the mountain to the observatory at night. Take a warm jacket and long trousers because there really is snow up there. The view at night will be one you will never forget. There are more stars to be seen there than you can ever believe. You will never regret taking that trip up the mountain. In fact take your daughter. Best to you, Mike

Howzit brada, you know da kind. Its been years since using the pigeon English.
Two of the guys who got me started in water hunting I met because they got attacked at Sandy Beach. They were working a cut at about 3 am and four mokes attacked them on the beach. What the locals didn't know was there were three guys with detectors and SS scoops. The third guy was behind the locals and got their attention with his scoop. The attackers ran for their can with the md'rs running behind. They "marked" the locals car for latter identification and reported the attack to the police. Oh yea the three guys mding were all young strong US Marines. I'll bet those attackers left people with metal detectors alone for a long time. I met them at the Military Police station on Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay where I was a Military Policeman at the time.

People don't realize that there are a lot of very poor people living in Hawaii. All you seem to see are nice expense cars and the houses are incredibly expensive. I have experience with some of the young locals and they can be very jealous of what they see others have. Its like any other big town it can be dangerous. I really did love living in Hawaii. I always thought it was kind of a rip off for the tourists and a great place to live at the same time. Best to all, Mike

back again mike i was in waikiki for the aloha festivle great to see the outer island queens ride down kalakaua ave on there horses ,and the school bands blew me away that night we went down to the big street party and was standing next to the biggest cops ive ever seen they had their guns straped to their legs ,then i see one of the cops give the silent nod to four other cops across the street all of a sudden this one cop had two street kids off the ground and was taking their baseball bats off them boy were they on the ball.terry in oz

Sweet, I remember we had anti-nuc protesters show up at our air station while I was working the main gate. I called the Col. to inform him that they had attempted to gain entry to the base but were denied. They had then set up just outside the main gate and got out their signs and started to chant. The Col said that the Honolulu Police Dept were sending their "special squad". Four plan clothed cops showed up in an early 70's model full size Chev 4 Door. All four had their shoulders hanging out of the windows because they were too big to fit in the car otherwise. They got out of the car, surrounded the protesters and only said "Hey bradda you gadda go". They then crushed the protester's signs and "assisted" them back into their car. I have to say I laughed a lot that day.

Do they still have the Carol Kye (?) bed race? For those who don't know they have a race where young women in nite clothes are pushed down the street in beds, or at least frames with wheels that resemble beds. I think it is a way to raise money for charity but hay its young women being pushed down the street in beds while wearing bed clothes, who really needs an excuse to hold the race. You don't need a better reason for visiting Hawaii than that.

Another thing the very best eye ball liberty in the world is down town Honolulu at lunch time when the lady office workers come out. Best suggestion have someone else drive and if its your wife, you need to wear sunglasses.

Best to all, Mike.

Yea, people just don't know. I remember getting to the point where pretty girls just weren't good enough, they had to be local girls. Man Hawaii girls can really spoil you for all others. I agree the Japanese/local girls are amazing. I remember going to the North Shore and just being stunned at the beauty of these girls. Twenty years in the Marine Corps and I have traveled the world and Hawaii is the best for girl watching. I hope to win the lottery and spend my advanced years on a bench watching the ladies walk by. Oh yea its the only place where I watched women wear high heeled shoes to the beach. Well that's enough of the good memories for me back to cold weather and Walter Mitty dreams. Best to all, Mike.

Thanks for all the info, gave me something to think about. I've decided to wait and check the area out. I think my friends are in the know where to and not to, hang out. I sure won't take all my possesions to the beach or leave them in the car. Maybe next trip I'll try to hook up with a fellow mder. Looking forward to the pretty girls.

in 1990 i was snorkeling in OHanabay .there is a cut that goes into a big bowl .that would rise and fall with the waves.in the cut i found 4 one hundred dollar bills.when i got out of the water. a local told me that i had his money!things did look good he was alot bigger than i,but i stood my ground.about the time it looked like we were going to get psychical .some guys came and said that they also had found money the local left with out a word.all told we had found 800 dollars.we where there in a group for an out- rigger canoe race.our team was made up from the North east.you had to hike to get to this place,on the way out a team member from Maine was walking back in.we asked what was up he said that he had lost some thing and was going back.we had found all but 200 of his money.never even got a beer out of it.iet there is a ton of stuff in there.

Welcome and Aloha,

The Excal is one of the Best Machines to use here on Ohau. I use the Excal in the water and the e-trac on the beach . With the sens and disc adjustments you can't go wrong. Your not having to dig everything as the case of the P.I. Not that the P.I is a bad machine at all. P.I. is one of the best.

As far as going in the water use common sense. Speak to your daughter since she is a surfer she should know the currents. There is alot of swimming areas and were there is swimming there is gold. Don't have to go in the water to find gold. The beaches are full of it.

Low tide is the best time for the water and daylight due to the creatures that may be around on the North Side.

Aloha and enjoy but most of all be wise and have a wonderful time here.

BOB
