MD'ing in the woods???

GotSilver?

New member
Hey all...given the increased summer activity in the parks, etc and the fear of burning up some manicured lawns in the hot spring/summer temps...I've been swinging it a little bit in some woods around my house. Seems like there's some good YouTube footage on successful hunts in woods...figured I'd give it a try too. Looking for your thoughts on any strategies you all use when MD'ing in the woods? Random walk? Do you stick to walking trails? Focus on lake edges in the woods if possible? Any thoughts would be appreciated as always...thank you!

"Random" woods will probably net you nothing. There needs to have been some sort of activity there, for there to be any targets, to begin with. Ie.: a camp, a park, an old homestead (cellar-hole or whatever), etc......

Do some research and try and find where the was an old picnic grounds. Those can be some of the best areas. I think every town had one or two. Old home foundationscan produce some good stuff. Basically any place where some kind of activity took place. Random hunts problably won't get you much.Swimming holes can be good also, just gotta find out where this stuff is. I start coversations with older people to try and find these kind of spots and sometimes I get some good info. Good luck.

I have always reserved the wooded sites for late fall and early spring hunting. You will find the foliage and mosquitos most menacing in the summer.
Check out the game laws in your state pertaining to hunting seasons and wear some blaze orange for safety. Had some .22 rounds zip overhead one fall.....not a good experience! Good Luck!

Like others have said, random woods searching will probably not get you much more than brass shotgun shells, and TICKS.
If I was you, read up on local history, do some field trips to check out potential sites, and get owner's permissions in the summer.
Then, plan trips around your state's hunting seasons.
Nothing worse than P.O.'d hunters ( they might be the landowner !)
You're best bet is probably early spring.
The leaves are all down, the soil is damp (good for conductivity) and other than spring turkey season, there shouldn't be any hunters.
Don't forget field hunting too.
Summer is a good time to visit interesting properties, talk with the owners and line up permission to hunt after the crops have been harvested.
