MD READINGS WHILE PROSPECTING?

I posted this in the Teknectics forum aswell.

The other day I was out in the desert with a friend, looking for some gold! We were just sampling area's and I thougt to try my detector, even though it is'nt for gold prospecting.(Tek4000).
We did'nt find any gold but my questions are: with my MD what readings should I be looking for IE:00-99, if it was to find a nugget? Also since the GB is pre-set and non adj. from the factory, am I just picking up the ground minerals?
I was using the MD mostly in A2 mode and got alot of iron readings and some dime or Qr. readings but nothing but dirt, rocks and black sand when we panned.
Thanks

And I answered it there as well!

You really need a better detector for the job. Sounds like you are getting false readings from ground mineralization. You have no ground balance so best you can do is lower the sensitivity. Use a test target! Gold, lead, or aluminum, they all will read the same if small. Most small nuggets I would expect to read as foil. But the bigger the nugget the higher the reading so rule is dig all non-ferrous readings at least. Best is to dig all targets, but that only works if you can get rid of the false signals.

Honestly, you are probably better off just using the gold pan. Or trade your 4000 for a G2.
