Hello all. I am relatively new to prospecting and have been out a several times digging some dirt. About 3 months ago I was given a metal detector for father

First....I don't live in Phoenix any longer....however I used to prospect out there veru heavily for several years.

First off...not to pee on your parade but the Goldstrike is not a good machine. It cannot handle the ground out there nor the ironstone.

To be honest the better machines out there are PI units. best for the money would be a Whites TDI.

If you are going to use a VLF detector than a Fisher Goldbug II is a great unit.

Also finding a seasoned prospector to take you out is very very difficult and trying to break into a group is like joining a secret society.

Not trying to poop on your parade.....just saying it is very very tough to find decent spots to detect that have not been pounded to death by everyone and their brother. Usually we had to ATV way way back and even then....miles in ....we would run into other prospectors.

Bst to try and introduce yourself on a local forum like this one.. http://www.arizonagoldprospectors.com/invision/index.php?/forum/2-gold-hunters-forum/

Maybe you can get someone to take you out...they won't take you to a great spot as a newbie but if you can gain some trust and show them you are not a dufus you may...just may stand a chance.

If you do post on that forum the moderator is Rod. He is a good man...you can tell him AZScott said hello...and sorry at the same time. He would get that. We were friends who had a falling out..no big deal...he is a very very decent person.

Look into either a Whites TDI or a GoldBug II...but for now keep the Goldstrike until you can get out with some locals and see if you want to keep this up.

Expect to dig iron..lots of iron and no gold. If you dig 10 lbs of iron before you ever see gold...well...thats about right. You are listening for the small faint signals...not the loud shallow ones...that is the junk.

Alot of guys hunt in the L:ittle San Domingo washes......always gold there. it can be found anywhere..in the dry creeks.....along the banks....shoot even on the tops of the hills.

Go over to the forum I posted and see if that helps.....they are a decent group of guys...just tough to join on a hunt. Hey it is gold...and the fever runs deep...but not the trust. Just keep that in mind....people get edgy around gold....makes em act different.

Tell em AZScott said hello haha....that should get the thread moving along. if they try and shoot me....well...all in good fun.

Oh...I am in New Hampshire now so can't take you out.
Scott

Thanks for the reply and the info.. I there are a few clubs that have been suggested. One that sounds good is an outing with AZO Outing at Gold Basin (Nov. 2nd - 4th, 2012) with it being out in November I was hopping that I can chat with a few members before the outing and see if any one of them would be willing to show me a thing or two.. I was at the gold and treasure show this weekend looking for the 6 inch coil for the gold strike and again few people said it was a great machine and a few said sorry to hear that you need to get this machine it will work so much better.... I will check out the forum you posted and pass along your message/joke...thanks again for the help in at least pointing me in the right direction..

Ya might try Nuggetshooters.com great group and a lot of them in that area.
