Maybe Tesoro should stop selling Detectors

All of us seem to like trading Dectectors. I only have one that I won't trade off myself and it is my old Golden Saber II. Maybe Tesoro should try a Monthly fee to in effect rent out their Detectors. Use this monthly fee toward purchase if the user decides to keep it. send it back any time with shipping being charged to the user. If the user decides not to send it back charge his card. I think it would work and I would get to try more detectors, of course I have already owned all the Notch models already but this could be a winner. I would love to try a Golden Umax with a 5 3/4 Coil, especially with the old tones installed.

Trust me, the 8 inch brown doughnut coil works great on the Golden. It's lighter than the 9 x 8 and the best that I can tell it's just as deep.

That is a great idea, you would need a dealer in your area for that to work. Unfortunately, I don't have that. The other thing is that I'm sure companies don't mind that the customer has to buy the product outright in order to try it.

Not a good idea in my opinion. There are those that would get a detector sent to them when they very well know that won't purchase it, possibly use it rough, open it up & tinker with it. Then Tesoro or the dealer would be at a loss.

Wouldn't be so bad if you didn't HAVE to open it up and tinker to get it to ground balance. But I guess one could just use it in wood chips and buy something else to use in real dirt.

we make machines for all purposes. If you need a machine that has a manual ground balance and buy one that does not?????????????????????????????

Robert,
Many really like the features of some of the Tesoro detectors that have fixed ground balance, such as those on the Golden

Maybe I wrote that wrong. We make units with a factory preset ground rejection for ease of use. This way somebody in mild ground can turn on and go. We do not modify units for anybody. Yes, it does suck that they may not work in heavy mineralization. We have units that have the manual ground balance for those areas that are highly mineralized.
The more features you add on to our units, the higher the cost and weight. I will post this again:

"It has become apparent to me over the past few years that there is a place for, even a need for, a metal detector manufacturer who is dedicated to the independent dealer market. The products should utilize the best of today's technology to provide maximum sensitivity. They should be rugged, but light enough that anyone can use them. They should do their job without "bells and whistles" that only increase the cost. And finally, the company should remain loyal to their dealers and be responsive to their needs and desires. It is with these principles in mind, that TESORO was founded in May of this year.
Tesoro is the Spanish word for treasure. The Spanish certainly seemed to understand and appreciate tesoro. Never in the history of the New World has there been a treasure hunt like the Spaniards held. It's hard to think of a better name for a company associated with treasure hunting, or a better symbol of our goals than the conquistador. As the Spaniards were yesterday's undisputed masters of treasure hunting, we at TESORO will always endeavor to meet our goal of making TESORO Metal Detectors today's undisputed masters of treasure hunting." Jack Gifford, 1980.

Please pay most of your attention to price and bells and whistles.

I'd own one more Tesoro if they came out with a Golden with adjustable ground balance. A fixed ground balance machine gives up too much in my area of ever changing ground.

They could call it the Golden Plus :)

I vote Golden Eagle

You maybe over simplifying it, just a bit. The changes your suggesting may not be as straight forward as you might think. If I'm not mistaken, those changes would require also modifying the circuit itself. It may not completely apply to this model, but discrimination, ground balance, thresh hold and even sensitivity have an interacting effect on each other. To add a GB as an after thought might require circuit changes / redesign as well. Robert is this correct, in part, for the Golden?

I think you are right. Most likely would affect the Notch as well as the tones. Since Notch is adjustable on the bottom end no problem but top end would be a problem as well as the tones.

I tend to get pretty logical and the first thing in my mind would be to put another knob on that would tune the TID. Seems like this would be pretty easy on a TID machine but what would you do with out a display unless you adjusted the thing to affect the top end of the Notch to accept Zinc pennies. This would most likely also affect tones so maybe just cause a Copper penny to high tone.

Golden Eagle Pro that is it.

If I were an IC design engineer I'd whip one up myself real quick, but since I'm not, I'll have to rely on the good folks at Tesoro to figure out the details.

DirtyDimes,
You do not know of what you speak.

I've owned and used Golden Micro Max detectors since 2004.

My very first Golden I bought used and it had a manual ground balance modification in a box glued to the outside. The machine worked fine, I could balance to all soils, and use all coil available for the machine. I nearly had them all. 7" concentric, 7" widescan, 8" brown round concentric, stock 9x8 concentric, 8-1/2" widescan, 11" widescan, 10.5" concentric, and the 3x18" Cleansweep coil and the little 4" concentric. I didn't have any issues with the ground balance or the tones.

After several years I sold that one and bought a newer used one and had that one modified with a manual ground balance. On this one, a new hole was drilled in the bottom of the box and the Threshold control was moved to that location and the manual ground balance pot was put where the threshold control used to be. Room for all controls inside the current box. Once again the detector worked perfect, could be manually ground balanced to my different soils and worked fine with all my coils.

This year I bought a brand new Golden and have not yet had it modified, though will do so at some point. Right now I routinely go through the pain of opening the damn thing and manually ground balancing it with a screwdriver when it needs it. If I don't it is only good for woodchips where no ground balance is needed.

A user adjustable ground balance feature is not "Bells and Whistles" and it is not rocket science.

The fact of the matter is these type of conversations never take place with any other mfg because they CAN and DO offer their models with the necessary feature to make the units work properly in most ground conditions. These conversations Do always take place here because Tesoro won't or can't provide a NECESSARY feature on their units, and if you complain they trot out the "Bells and Whistles" liturgy and tell you to like it or lump it and take a hike elsewhere.

The hope is maybe, just maybe, they'll listen and make detectors that can be used in more places than wood chip playgrounds or Florida beaches because they do offer some useful features/performance that could be expanded into use in real dirt.
