Maybe some of you Tesoro Owners can tell me?

KCK

How come I see every manufacturer metal detectors made selling used on Ebay except Tesoro Brand? They sell then new but there is no used ones being sold! That's saying something to me....They must be a great detector....please tell me why?

Thanks KCK

just for kicks i check once in a while on ebay and your right you don't see many used, but i don't really check all the brands either to compare.

[size=medium]I see Tesoros all the time on ebay, used. Just not a ton of them. Ditto for Garretts - lots of new, but few of the current ones sold used.

However, I wouldnt assume its because either one is so great (that's like saying just because some place is "old" that there HAS to be silver coins there). Tesoro's are good in their own right - I own several of them, along with others. I think what you are attributing to a better detector actually has more to do with ownership numbers.

If you go to Toms Treasures and look at their ownership survey, here:

...you'll find that WHITES gear has the lions share of use. Tesoro is a distant also-ran on all counts, behind Garrett, Bounty Hunter, Minelab and Fisher.

This corresponds to fewer Tesoro's sold. It's just the numbers.
Through what I suspect is no small coincidence, Whites are also the most available used detector on ebay.

Hummmm - I have the Tejon and Cibola for Tesoro's, and I know I have no desire to let them go. I like the lightweight, balance, fast response, tight pinpointing (actually i don't use the pinpoint feature much as the target hits tight - just X the target), common batteries, discrimination circuit, depth, and warranty. Nice color too.... Sorry I didn't list but what just first comes to mind. - no ebay for mine...

Light weight, easy to use, great iron masking circuitry, and a life time warranty. No other manufacturer can has that.

...the "lifetime warranty" has stipulations and it shouldnt be construed as a blanket policy...

Tesoros Lifetime Warranty(underline emphasis mine)

"This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may have other rights which vary from state to state.

This instrument is warranted to be free of defects in material and workmanship as long as it is owned by the original consumer purchaser. This warranty is not transferable and is valid only if the warranty registration card has been completed and mailed within 10 days of purchase.

TESORO will, at its option, repair or replace any instrument covered by this warranty, without charge, except for transportation charges, at its factory in Prescott, Arizona.

This warranty excludes batteries, damage caused by leaky batteries, cable breakage due to flexing on body mount units, and wear of the searchcoil housing. Also excluded are instruments which have been abused, altered, or repaired by an unauthorized party."

Happily, for all of us, Tesoro is very generous in exercising it's option.

Well I for one have found my Deleon to work very well and I will not EVER sell it! I will be buying a new machine soon because I am a techy kind of guy and want more toys, but I find my machine does very well, is made well, and I find stuff with it. That is just my opinion. One other thing about the Deleon is it is so easy to use, turn it on and start swinging it. Not much of a learning curve.

Also Tesoro is more of a boutique type machine. By that I mean there are a TON of Minelabs, Whites, Fishers sold but just not a lot of Tesoro machines. I am not totally sure what the reason is for this, it is difficult to locate as many dealers for Tesoro as the for the other machines. But I can tell you Tesoro is one great machine.

I disagree about Tesoro being generous in exercising it's option. I am the original consumer purchaser of a Cortes. Even though the unit was in pristine new condition the unit was used by an authorized dealer to practice ground balancing so my purchase could be best described as purchasing a demo unit. When I tried to register the unit I was first turned down by Heidi the Customer Service person. I sent a letter to James Gifford and he would not allow me to register for the warranty either.

I must say that I very happy with my Cortes and am very glad I purchased it. But any future Tesoro purchase of mine will be because I like the machine, not because of or to depend on the "lifetime warranty".

He must have already sent the warranty in, otherwise Tesoro would not have rejected your request. Was there a warranty card with the Cortes? If not, the dealer should have told you that. Your beef should be with the dealer, me thinks.

... and no one likes to be a flash in the pan, but in your case I'd say its fact.

Over the years I have had to return a detector or two to Tesoro for repair. ALL but one were used instruments I bought from another. To date, not a one of them has been refused on the grounds that I was not the original purchaser. Most recently it was a Tiger Shark that I had messed up by getting adjustment happy. They resolved that, made a minor repair to the battery terminals and paid to return it to me - setting me straight for being a nincompoop in the bargain.

Additonally, I am not the only one who reports this generous policy. You are, in fact, the first person I have heard of that has been turned down on any grounds. Most likely its as the others say, your warranty was extended to the dealer, who reigistered in advance of you. I suggest you contact Mr Gifford and talk to him IN PERSON. Find out what is going on, straight from the horses patoot. I believe you will find, as I have, that he is an agreeable chap, just like his dad.

While Tesoro makes the statements noted above in their warranty, on the whole they represent legalese and protectionist mumbo-jumbo. Unless you run the thing over with a truck on purpose, in the vast majority of cases they back up their products, no questions asked.

The Cortes (like all Tesoro machines) is excellently built and I have not needed to send the unit in for any repairs. If I ever do I will let you know how the experience goes and if the repair is covered without any questions. It would be great if that happens.

I do not have a beef with the dealer, I knew that it was a demo unit and it was priced accordingly. My problem was that I researched the warranty on the Tesoro website and read the warranty language there prior to purchase. I made some assumptions. In my naivety and lack of legal sophistication I assumed that it did not matter if it was a demo or not as long as I was the original consumer purchaser (which I am). I have purchased many returns and demos at various retailers over the years and the full factory warranty always applied.

Moral: Ask before you buy, never assume. :)

Call James, nonetheless. He's a pretty good guy.
