Maybe my first platinum?

Southwind

Well-known member
Rang up a solid 55 on my AT Pro. I don't see any designers mark, which I assumed would be there on platinum, but I do see a PT and a S. What do you think? My first or what? The 10 diamonds do test out as real and it feels heavier than gold would be.

very nice, ... nice looking ring .... great find .

I bet it is!

If you want to try a trick, take a propane torch and heat it up gently....of course, hold it with a pair of pliers!....if it discolors, its stainless or something...plat has a really high melting point so it should not discolor from a propane torch....the mark, weight, and real diamonds lead me to believe its plat...Let us know for sure wouldja?

PLAT....Looks like an A and a T could have been were the diamond is placed, with a part of the T still there. The S is the makers mark. Weight is right also. Congrats!!

By Gosh Bob, you may be right! I enlarged the picture, theres what looks like the top of the "T" hanging there....not definitive, but still a clue...

I would say a definite 99% yes to PLAT!! If you have plat testing acid, that will confirm it for you!:clapping:

Took it to the local Kmartin Jeweler and got the news. He even commented on how heavy it was and how clean the diamonds were. Yes it is 950 Platinum with 10 diamonds and he says it would sell for around $3,500 SCORE!!!

Wow, nice one... funny thing is the planum rings dont look a whole lot different than some of the new age metals... congrats on that one..

Hot Damn Southie! :surprised::yikes:

Way To Go! Congratulations!:beers: You are one gold hunting heavy fool, lots of great finds and many chains under your belt, so I am a bit surprised this was your first Plat...so now dish with the details behind the hunt! Was it in the water? or on the dirt somewhere? What is the backstory to this amazing find?

Super find Southwind! Don't keep us in suspense, tell us the rest of the story

The story has played out for me many times. I had hunted our local city park to the point where all the easy stuff is pretty much history. Having tried about every major detector and coils till the park no longer gave up the goods, I figure its time for another approach. Start cleaning out the junk to expose the masked goods. I grabbed the AT Pro and headed to one of the higher producing areas with the intentions of cleaning out all solid signals first. Very first target I hit was a clean 55 from all directions so I was thinking maybe nickle, probably a pull tab. It was only about an inch down so I stuck the old screw driver just under it and popped it out.

My first thoughts were a cheapy ring but as I was covering my hole a quick glance at it laying on the ground and I though no, it is too clean probably a silver ring. Then again as I was about to pick it up for a closer look I was reminded that it read a 55 on the AT Pro. Again I thought no can't be silver way too big to read a 55 which is gold/tab territory. Then I picked it up and thought Holy Crap that is unnaturally heavy. I've found many gold rings but never felt one so dense and soft to the touch as this one. At that point something told me I had something different. I tried to find a K mark thinking gold but all I could see was what looked like 2 letters PT. I packed up my ATP and headed home I just had to know what it was. Once I got home my first action was to get the good old diamond/moissanite tester and test the stones. All tested as diamonds so I took pictures I posted them on here to see if just possibility I had a first and if enough people though so I'd take it to the jeweler for their thoughts.

I took it to the jeweler and told them I'd like to get an appraisal. The gal said If I wanted a written appraisal it would run $100 but I could get a quick appraisal for free. Still having my doubts I went for the freebie. I overheard the jeweler telling the girl there was $1,000 just in stones and then he said man that thing is heavy. He came out of the back room and handed it to me telling me it had very clear stones and if they were to sell it they would sell it for $3,500.

Right now it is down having a written appraisal done. I figured it was worth the $100.

There has been many times I go out to hunt and my very first find is my best of the hunt.

According to a web site that I look at for information on ring markings you have a Platinum Ring.

Pt marking in a ring is Platinum.

Congratulations.

They charged you $100 to look at it? Ouch!! $100 for 3 minutes work. That's $2000 per hour .:surrender:

No the quick appraisal was free that is the quote for a written appraisal.

I got my written appraisal today. The reason I wanted it is when I go to sell it the appraisal carries more weight as to the true value. Still more a retail value than what I could expect to get out of it but it is good as gold for insurance purposes. Plus I get a bit more info on the ring. For example, I now know it has .50 carat in diamonds, which is also called a 50 pointer, and the quality is not bad. Color H means the high side of near colorless which is very good. Best is colorless.
