(Maybe/Maybe Not) Relics Question

Hello all,

I've managed to find some horse and from what I can tell mule shoe halves and pieces with the nails still in some. I also found a length of chain that appears to be pretty old (cant tell that there is any weld joints and the individual links look to inconsistent from one link to another, meaning some are the correct shape, some look more of an egg shape, and some the links are thinner than others). At least from what I've been told is that if does not have weld joints then that is a key to know that it is a much older chain. Is there was a way to guesstimate the age or age range of these items? Thanks for any help.

Well, with the chain it's easy. You just count the links......sorry I could'nt resist. I'm going absolutely ape$hit up here in WinterWorld....

Good to read about people finding stuff though...

LOL!! That would be great if it were that easy. Thanks. That's about all I've found, but I think it's pretty interesting to have an idea of what may have taken place or may have happened on the land your detecting on.

Sorry, I probably shouldn't have posted that question here. I don't know much about the history of the land I was detecting on. I know it was in use since the early 30's as farmland (mainly cows but apparently crops as well), but wasn't sure if anything had happened before that and was just trying to get an idea of how long/old the property had been in use beyond the 30's and what it may have been used for. That's probably not the best way to go about it though. Thanks for the help.

Go to the County Courthouse to the office of the County Registrar and they will have records of all the property in their area going back to day one - who owned it, what was on it, what it was used for, etc.

A buddy of mine found some mule shoes and a friend of his shoes horses. He was able to tell him from the style that they were about 100 years old. If you can find someone who shoes horses, they may be able to help.

Thanks. I didn't think about that. I don't know of anyone right off that does that, but I'm sure there's someone around that does. Thanks again.
