Though I pray for the safety of those who are in the path of Katrina and pray for damages to be less than anticipated, I can't help but feel I am praying incorrectly. Not that I mean I don't think people -and especially God's people shouldn't be safe and that the damages are minimal but I think there is more I should be praying for. Maybe not just I but my brothers and sisters in Christ as well.
Jesus set an example for us many times. I think of when He was asleep and the people on board the ship thought they would drown. They were in fear of their lives. What did Jesus do? He spoke to the storm and said Peace - be still.
Mark 4:37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? (KJV)
I think then too of what Jesus said when a man's son was considered a 'lunatic' and had been brought before the disciples and they were unable to cast out the devil. (Matt.17:14-21). Jesus said (Mt 17:20) And Jesus said unto them, "Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you"
I also know Jesus said in Matthew 16:19 "And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
Is it a reach for me to think that God doesn't want us to just sit idly by praying for just the safety of man and property but shouldn't we be binding the source of the problem? Ever see one of those little 'whirl winds' as you walk along a beach or a road? What is that also called? I have heard it called 'a dirt devil'. If I am out on a limb and you think me nuts then ok but I can't help thinking if there is a dirt devil there is a water devil and right now it is taken the name of Katrina.
Can we bind this devil? Can we take away its power to destroy? If we bind it on earth in the name of Jesus, do we not think that Jesus will not honor our binding and also bind that water devil from heaven?
I want to give a couple examples. One day with a fellow Christian brother we were notified of an impending tornado coming into our town. My Brother in Christ didn't bat an eye. He went outside with Bible in hand and 'talked to the storm - "You're not bringing that into our town and destroy people and property. I bind you in the name of Jesus and whatsoever I bind on earth is bound in heaven." I was surprised by his actions and his comments and even more surprised when the rain stopped suddenly and no tornado appeared. Later the skies cleared.
One time this same brother and I worked security at a bank and someone came into the parking lot from their car and was spouting profanity all over as he walked towards the entrance of the bank. Brother Dave spoke again "In the name of Jesus you will not use that foul language in this place. I bind your tongue from speaking such filth and I blind your eyes so you cannot see the entrance of this building." The profanity stopped and try as he might the man could not figure out how to get into the building so he left - quietly.
Last week a family on the side street near my house was yelling profanities at each other. I spoke and said "In the name of Jesus, that will be enough of that foul language. I bind your tongues so that you will not utter such filth." There was one more loud outburst of profanity then all was quiet. It has been quiet over there since. I know my God has bound them in Heaven as I have bound them on earth.
Is it too far fetched to believe we as Christians cannot take the wind out of Katrina by binding the devil that is behind it?
Someone told me well if Christians die in the hurricane maybe it was their time. I ask myself - using that logic - why did God save Lot and his family when Sodom and Gomorrah was leveled - we could just have well said it might be their time. God saved the righteous - even if there was only one - God did not allow that one to die.
My prayer is this: In the name of Jesus, I bind the devil that controls Hurricane Katrina and that the winds will be at "peace and be still". Let no harm come to the people or to their property. What I bind on earth Father God I ask you to bind in heaven in the name of Jesus. Protect your children Father God and protect those who have yet to come to be known as your children. Let your glory be poured out and praise be given in the name of Jesus. Thank you Father God for hearing me. Also Father, if any others agree with me, if two or more are gathered together in the name of Jesus, there you are in our midst. I pray other brothers and sisters in Christ will stand firm on faith with me and with you in our midst who can be against us. Praise and glory in Jesus name.
