it's in rough shape and I don't know a lot about buttons, maybe it's not a button?. I dug this when they tore up a street to repave it. I was thinking it should have been in better condition being under the asphalt. I found that and a 1912 barber dime.what fun ,wish I had started metal detecting years ago.

Is it the size of a penny?

being the condition its in Electrolysis may be the only way to get an Idea

It has a domed and a flat side, just like a button would have It is not magnetic although you can see rust with the corrosion on it. Thanks

If i am honest its one of those finds that i doubt that you will ever find out what it is for sure,it has more of a chance of being some form of a button a possible higher point in tn the middle on one side would indicate the possible shank for a button, not even the slightest detail for indicating it to be a coin.

My bet would be on a very very worn button that has been dropped because the shank has come off.

Yes, I left it on the computer desk and my wife threw it in the garbage so it's moot point but thank you for taking the time to respond. I need to get off my duff and start researching the civil war camps here in my area. I should see if the museum at the VA is still open, there is a ton of civil war relics and pictures to be seen. They were moving it last I tried to visit and I never followed up to see where it has moved to. I jumped the Tesoro ship and have a Teknetics T2 classic on the way.....might be the ticket for relic hunting, comes with a extra 15" coil, I'm going to town to hunt for a spade type shovel today.
