May not have been the most responsible decision....

Tired Rooster

but I just ordered a new GT and can't wait till it gets here!!:clapping: I have been intrigued by this machine for a while now and have been reading here on this forum for a few months. I'm sure that it won't disappoint. Really hoping I will be able to find deeper targets that are out there. Using mostly for coins and relics. Any advice would be welcome.......Thanks!

Hi Tired Rooster,

Go back and hit every hunting spot with the sovereign and report back :) Really, you will love this detector (I know I do ) sweep slow & listen to the tones ( I use a meter which help me tons in deciphering tones + I have hearing loss so a meter is a must for me) Don't become discouraged and quit even before you get started lol. That is how I felt but once I started learning this machine ( and I am still learning) I quickly changed my views on this detector. Sweep slow and give the detector time analyze the targets and then you will be posting your wonderful finds here on findmall. One thing to take note of - the volume on the GT is TARGET volume so get a good set of headphones and make sure you have the volume up on the GT so you can hear the faint / deep targets. Keep reading through the posts as there is tons of super info on operating the sov GT. Best of luck and wish you great success in the field. - Jim

Thanks for the info earthlypotluck! I am expecting a good learning period with the GT but am really excited about it. I have heard so many great things about the GT's abilities from people who learned it well. I am sure I will eventually post with questions and hopefully some TREASURE:clap:!! Glad to become part of the Sovereign clan. Should arrive late next week!!!

The Gt has a one of a kind threshold like no other detector out there, and yes it will be a surprise when first used, hanging in there will pay off in a short time. Good luck

Welcome to the Sov GT family

If you have a beach near give it a go, easy digging and you can learn your sounds too. Good hunting!

I never thought I would say it...But after I got my second Sov. that came with a "Ron's 180 meter", I now fully recommend getting a meter. Especially if you are new to the Sov, I know it has been said many times by others, but it took actually having it in my hand to give it a try and I am glad I did! It is simple to install and use. the weight it adds is not really noticeable to me. Good luck to you and welcome to the Sov Club you are in for quite a ride! :)

Hi Tired Rooster,

I, too, just ordered a Sovereign GT from Bart at BigBoysHobbies. A great guy to do business with, and
he gave me a very good deal. Thanks Bart!

Like you, I am not so sure this was my most responsible decision, as I would not be surprised if Minelab
decides to upgrade a couple of models this year. But I am anxious to start learning this detector and see
what it can do. I know that will take me awhile, but the advice available on this forum is awesome and
greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!:)

Congratulations on your purchase!!

It's takes a little time to familarize yourself with the " language " but you will not be disappointed . Test common targets on the ground to get some basic response tones.
Forget the meter for now .
Learn what the machine is saying about the signals .
And as above , re-hunt your favorite spots and see what you may have missed.

Zero discrim set
Zero notch set
Low threshold
Auto power ( for now )
Iron mask on ( iron signals will " null " or blank out in sound ) GREAT FEATURE !

And most important ! .... Slower sweep is needed
Test over your targets to see what i mean , this is a slower sweep but deeper seeking machine.

Also , deep targets will sound whisperlike or be fainter. Unlike other machines that try to BOOST audio..

Good luck.:twodetecting: :minelab:

Thanks, and congrats to you too Thunder2! I'm not in the least bit worried about Minelab upgrading. I just wasn't sure if spending that kinda $$$ was the most responsible thing to do right now:unsure:. But I am very much looking forward to learning this GT. I like knobs and toggle switches and have never owned anything but VLF machines, so the BBS has really got me excited. And yes, there is a huge amount of knowledge and experience here that will help alot during the learning period. Very nice and helpful people here.....I have already found this out. My GT is supposed to be here tomorrow!!!! OH BOY:detecting:!!!! Good luck with yours Thunder2 and lets have some fun!

Thnks Tired Rooster. Yes, i'm excited about using this machine too, as it is entirely different then anything i have detected with before.
I think we are going to really enjoy this detector. Good luck to you too.

Congradulations on your purchase!!
The Sovereign has impressed me more than any other detector I have in my arsonal.
I have really been impressed at the finds that I have made in sites that have been hunted hard and considered "hunted out".
If you have some sites like this,by all means once you get to know the Sovereign and feel comfortable with it, search these areas and you will be impressed by its performance also and you may be surprised that the finds are not all that deep, but lying next to iron making it difficult if not impossible for others to recover them.
Looking forward to seeing your great finds.
Good luck,
Felix

I don't have a GT yet, But there is one on hold for me.... chomping at the bit to use it, and hitting all the spots I have been to so far, just to see what more I can get from the areas. Between that and an Excal for water hunting... I may not get homework done... ah, but I will, I just might have to MD late into the nights... :surprised: will then need lot-a-cuppa-java
