Been searching in the fields where weeds are starting to grow. With the last 3 hunts I picked 15 ticks off my clothes and one found one on my car seat two days later. The last time out I tried spraying my pant legs with Raid Ant & Roach Killer, bad smelling stuff. Thought that would do it for sure, didn't stop them. One website said to wear clothes they can't cling to. Like what? Plastic film clothes? Wrap garbage can liners around pant legs? Or duct tape wrapped around above the knees? Anyone know any methods. They are less active in the fall, will wait till then if I have to.
Those little blood-sucking vampires cling to everything. We found one in our house, in a doorway about half-way up, with half it's legs clinging to the door jam, and it's other legs sticking out in the air waiting for someone to brush-up against it. Smart little b@stards. Hard to kill too...you gotta take a matchstick to them.
There is a product called Permethrin that can be sprayed on your hunting clothes. It will kill ticks and it lasts about 6 washings after treating your clothing. Do a google search on Permethrin and you can see more about it.
Permethrin is toxic to cats. Many cats die after being given flea treatments intended for dogs, or by contact with dogs having recently been treated with permethrin.
I have had success with 100% Deet spray. And if you get a tick on you, spray the tick, soon it will release it's grip on your skin.
Always keep a tick spoon on hand, removes ticks fast without leaving their jaws behind
By the way, hate ticks. Took a shower once after dirt fishing, can't see well without my glasses, what I thought was dirt spot on my leg was a tick.
"Permethrin does not present any notable genotoxicity or immunotoxicity in humans and farm animals, although it is believed to cause cancers.
Permethrin is classified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a likely human carcinogen, based on reproducible studies in which mice fed permethrin developed liver and lung tumors.[8] Carcinogenic action in nasal mucosal cells due to inhalation exposure is suspected, due to observed genotoxicity in human tissue samples, and in rat livers the evidence of increased pre-neoplastic lesions raises concern over oral exposure.[9][10]
Studies by Bloomquist et al., 2002 [11] suggested a link of permethrin exposure to Parkinson's disease, including very small (per kg.) exposures." [from Wikipedia]
A safe and effective alternative is UltraSafe Plus Solution from www.safersoaps.com [1-800-301-9911 ] It is a non-toxic plant-based soap the is amazing against insects of all kinds, from wasps to spiders, ticks, lice and fleas. Also can put it on your skin to keep mosquitoes from landing, even in a remote fly-in lake in the Rockies. I have personally seen it kill whole nests full of wasps in about a minute, with NO toxicity. Just talked to Paul Tima at SaferSoaps.com and he recommended a 50/50 blend of their UltraSafe Plus commercial cleanser and UltraSafe Degreaser.
if you have a suppressed immune system, are up on age or similiar, be especially careful, ticks carry more than just lymes which is bad enough by itself. I wont be back out in the woods till first frost in Oct or Nov.
sometimes ya can "burn 'em off!"..ya gotta be careful to put the lighted butt right up against the "blood sack"
they will pull out if ya keep pressure on the blood sack with the lighted butt!..just sayin!
reminds me of the time as a kid i saw a neighbor burnin' 'em off squirrels
he would take a lighted cigar, blow on it to get it good and red hot, then press it up against the
tick's blood sack and get it to let go!..then he would use tweezers and drop it in a can of gas.
once he got about 20 of 'em in the can,he would touch it off,and burn 'em up!..it was nasty, and made us kids "puke"
just sayin!
