Maxwell Motors, thingee....

My all time favorite comedian, Jack Benny, used to say he drove a Maxwell and it had the reputation of being slow and unreliable in his act. I think he used to joke it was steam powered. Mel Blanc did the sound effects. The company stopped making cars at some point and started making something else like pencils, I forget.

That is a really first rate find! I bet there are not a lot of them around either and it's in good condition too. I'm really jealous!

Chris

Nice piece of history. Can't be to many of those around. Nice find.

I believe Maxwells were built during the teens and twenties, along with others that are no longer around. Nice find.

Last year I found a thin metal plate that used to be attached to a Velie (pronounced vee lee) automobile. It was engraved with the company name and the model number and the serial number. I had never heard of that brand and had to google it and found that it was made in the 1910' s and 1920's. There is even a collector's club devoted to the surviving Velie's. But the plate was battered with a tiny hole or two and some corrosion, so even though I got a neat little history lesson out of the deal, it is not nearly as purty as your Maxwell Motors thingee, so congratulations on a rare find.

Yeah, I should follow up on that. When I e-mailed the Velie club for some info, the man that answered me said I could auction or offer it for sale on their site. I didn't do it at the time because I thought it would sell a lot better if I cleaned it up some first. I had just read someone else's post about using hydrogen peroxide to clean items, so I tried that but it didn't work. Later I read that you need to heat the peroxide to make it work, so I need to go back and try that.
