MAX Questions---

Has anyone compared depth loss, if any, using the 5x8 coil vs. the std.. 8.5x11 ? Also is there a lighter, by at least 20%-40%, aftermarket coil that will meet or exceed the 8x11 in depth and separation but also about the same size. I extended the armrest back 2" and even turned the coil around. It' still end heavy for me. Same as the Pro/Gold. Most "hunters" are very mechanical and constantly looking to improve on things. I have the5x8 but would prefer a slightly bigger coil for field relic hunting. Any help would be much appreciated.

Below I have a video with depth tests using three Garrett Coils.....5 x 8, 8.5 x 11, & 9 x 12. This was a live test with coins buried in the ground.

To lighten the weight, you can shorten the rod extension, creating less stress on your elbow joint, switch to a straight rod and transfer the weight more to your shoulder, do exercises to maintain and increase strength in your arm/shoulder muscles and a company, "Nel" does make after market coils. You have to order the ones which are designed for the AT Pro, as they are the only ones compatible to the MAX currently.

Hope this helps.......

Thanks John. I'll look into all your suggestions. Seems way ,way back I used to fly into a Canadian Air Force base at Edmonton. Is it still there? That was over 50 years ago. I was U.S. Navy.

That would have been Namao, correct? I actually worked there for one year as a civilian. There used to be an annual air show there, with aircraft from all over the world. I used to fly hot air balloons for a living 30+ years ago, and used to do tethered balloon rides at the air show. The base is still active, however, the runway and tower are now closed. The runway was long enough that it was considered an alternative emergency landing strip for the space shuttles from NASA. Small world, isn't it?

I just purchased the 9x5.5 nel fortune coil for the at max. Haven't really tested it hard but it seems to be about the same weight as the 5x8 which I also have . The fortune has a little more coverage area and I did dig a few pennies around the 6-7 inch depth . Like I said I didn't have much time but it seems to be a nice to coil add to your equipment. Will continue testing and let you know how it goes . HH

Well in "my" opinion for an after market coil I use the NELS 5.5x9 and see NO depth difference to the 8.5x 11, the other one I use is the Garrett 6.5x9 concentric and also do not see any depth loss.
If you have someone close try one of there's before you buy. You may be surprised .
I have the garrett 5x8 , 6x9 concentric , 8,5x11 , 9x12 concentric and the NEL 5.5x9. right now my favorite setup is the 6x9 concentric on my MAX and the NEL 5.5x9 on my PRO

Yes John a small world. We would refuel and sometime spend the night there on the way to the Arctic, over to Tromso, Norway, Oslo, then to Thule and once in a while to Keflavik and back through Canada. Loved Canada. We were always treated royally. Never could figure how the Canadian pilots could drink so much liquor up till take-off and never kill themselves. Hot air balloons? Forget it. Sounds like a good way to kill yourself. Did spend one tour flying airships (anti sub warfare). When nuke subs came in they could outrun us. 362' long and only 55-65 knots and pray for little to no head wind. My wife is buried in Peggy's Cove near Halifax. Killed on Swissair Flt. 111 , Sept. 2nd. 1998. Her beauty, sweetness and kindness lives on in our daughter. Who knows, maybe I'll meet you one day. Better be soon though. Age. God Bless Canada.

A lot of info. THANKS. I'm in overload. Will look at it again tomorrow.

Has anyone had the headphones lose the z-link and the detector go back to external speaker? Happened twice. I had the headphones and detector normal distance apart each time.

Woody, I can't even begin to fathom what you went through almost 20 years ago. Very belated condolences.

Hopefully all will get straightened out for you with the Max.

Albert I believe the 5.5x9 is the NEL Sharpshooter (I have one) and the 9x13 is the NEL Fortune.

Sorry Buddy . It's the cors 9x5.5 coil it's also called fortune . Not the nel. Can't upload foto. File too big.

You speak so kindly of your wife. She must have been a real special person! Very nice comment about how her sweetness and kindness remain through your daughter! And......yes, who know, we just could cross paths some day

Got to be a long way from S.E. Georgia to Edmonton. At my pace I would probably die of old age before I could drive it.

10-4 Thought you were speaking about the NEL coils, my mistake.

Yes... a few times. Headphones freshly charged too ? Was wearing the headphones and holding the detector when it happened each time. Seems to re-sync on its own pretty quickly so I was not too bothered, but I will start keeping track more. TJR
