Maui HELP! We want to rent a detector, but.can't find one!

Hello fellow treasure hunters! We are intermediate skilled detector owners who desperately want to rent one for a day or two, on the beautiful island of Maui.

I have called most of the rental places, dive and snorkel shops, and quizzed a few locals. They usually act as if I am from another planet. That's another story. Can anybody here help direct me to a place where we can rent a sand/water metal detector for a couple of days? THANK YOU for reading this, and I hope you can help us. Mahalo!

Carrie

Thanks for your suggestion. I intended to reply sooner, but I found we were very busy on Maui! We tried Walmart, K Mart, (sigh), and a couple sporting goods stores, but couldn't find any metal detectors at all, period. A Walmart employee told me that they only carry "that kind of stuff," closer to Christmas. For whatever reason, HI's yellow pages are less than stellar. I even resorted to the classified with no luck.

I had looked on the internet before we left and several rental stores there indicated they rented metal detectors, only to find out they actually did not. Oh, one guy had one, but he wasn't "sure if it worked or not, but I could try it." Uh huh, as if I'm going to end up being liable for his dead detector! I suggested to him that he try dropping a quarter on the floor and running the detector over it to see if it beeped! He didn't get it.

Having a detector on Maui would have been an absolute blast and I'm sorry it didn't work out. My husband and son ran across a guy sand dozing in front of Ka-anapali beach. He told them he had paid $700 for his machine and found 50 "really nice" rings the first year, and was at 27 for this year. Did they ask any questions? Nope!

Next time I'm taking my own detector wherever I'm going! Thanks again to all of you who tried to help.

Ack. No, I didn't. I don't know WHY I didn't. Perhaps it was a case of too much sun. I was sure I heard some sizzling going on somewhere, and I wasn't near the barbecue at the time. Thank you for mentioning it anyhow; you never know when I might need it in the future, and if it helps someone else on here, then it is worth it.

Okay, so I am royally hacked off I didn't think of it, but I'm trying to be an adult about this. I'm going to go into the garage now, so I can scream in peace.

By the way, my son WAS able to help several people at the pool. He returned one toe ring, one earring, and a key card, to distraught, but thrilled people. He kept the wheatie, and also the 1962 penny because it was almost as old as his mom.

I should mention that sixteen years ago my husband lost his gold wedding band off Maui, probably at about mile marker 14 or so, while snorkeling. Yes, we learned the hard way, and no, we have never worn any jewelry in the water since that day.

It was engraved on the inside, "Jim and Carrie, Our Promise 9-13-80," in case anybody here ever finds it. You just never know. I would pay shipping, handling, and a handsome finder's fee!

And no, that's not why I wanted to find a detector to use on Maui, but yes, I probably would have meandered over to that area just in case.:detecting:
