Masking video

Well-known member
Well at the end of the video I said field and it was in the basement .So I went outside and did the same test with the same results. sube https://youtu.be/e9QX7iekB5s

Interesting video Sube! Have you tried swapping the tab and the dime? I assume the shallower target would control the signal?
Thx,
Mikw

Would be interesting to see that same test with say a F75 small coil or Nokta fors core with 5 in coil, a friend of mine has been using the small coil on his nokta and recovering a lot of silver in a school yard he hit hard with the ctx with stock coil.

Controlling the signal no it's just keeping the return signal on the dime from being strong enough for the detector from seeing it .As the dime gets shallower say 2 inches you would start to get a return signal on the dime directly under the tab even but the vid would be lower say 12.35 because it's a blended target now .If the dime was deeper say 6 inches the signal on the dime would be even weaker there by making the area around the tab wider than the 16 inches as compared to the dime 4 inches .

Now you wonder why you can find anything when the ground is covered in trash because they are not evenly distribute there are holes in there where you can get good signals .It's not just tabs nails bottle caps it's all things that well block the return signal of the dime , that means it's got a stronger signal than the dime and the dimes signal being weaker can't be seen by the detector .

But most places that I find the tabs and caps are 2 to 3 inches deep already there by letting me find the coins at 4 to 5 inches next to tabs or bottle caps nails thank God are almost always at coin depth or deeper allowing you to find that coin as deep as the nail except where a old house or other structure was removed and the nails are just starting to sink . This is where a strong magnet is advised to remove as much of the surface nails as you can before hunting.

Now as for picking a coil for the job think of it this way you just went over a tab there's another tab 8 inches away from the last one your coils 11 or 10 inches wide and long you will be picking up the last tab with the tail of the coil killing the signal between the tabs you could of heard with a 6 inch coil so many scenarios and ways the junk lays in the ground .The coiltec coil being only 5 inches wide would be better on a east west hit than the 6 inch but look at the tail part of this also .If they would of built a 4 by 6 coil I would be all over it but they built a general purpose coil which is not optimum for trash or big areas kind of a in between coil trying to get the best of two worlds .

So if you see that tab laying there pick it up you may get a present surprise .

You see all these videos where the guy is doing a nail board test with a deus when he gets to the nail with the dime next to it east west hit he trys to get a signal with the tip of the coil which he does but when he goes over it with the center of the coil it sputters out .I would really like to see a test like I did with the ctx done with the deus any takers .That's coins at depth with a target above . Just wondering if speed has any effect on the test I did .I don't have a deus but it would be fun testing one .As far as technology minelab is the only detector that can actually see a coin under a nail on a west east hit depending on the size of the nail where the nail signal won't over ride the coin signal. But I wonder what deus is going to release in there update I can almost bet you minelab is working on nail under coin thing right now maybe a UPDATE or a new detector . sube

And he should of wrong coil for the job. if the guy would of used the 6 instead of the stock coil on the ctx the guy with the fisher or nokta would of got a lot less . Just poor coil choice . sube

Sube, thsnks for the detailed responce. How about a quarter... How will that test go? I think the masked area would be smaller diameter, due to increase non ferrous qty.
How about a half, would the half overpower the junk target due tilo its size? Eould thing the conductive would fall and blend, as you put it???
Thx

All true yes as long as the return signal is as strong as the tab or stronger . sube

So, essentially the probability is primarily missing dimes, which in my opinion are the majority of silver targets one finds. Personally, not sure why dimes... Is it because they were smaller snd more easily lost, or was it dur to a dime being worth more, at the time and more prevelant? I guess one could do a quick look at mintage for any particular timeframe.
Thx

No the quarter and half will suffer the same faith as the dime but to a lesser degree still will be masked but will be able to see them in this test closer than the dime but as they get deeper and the return signal gets weaker the tab will override it . I think the reason you find more dimes is because they are easier to be masked then a quarter or half as detectors get better there seeing more . sube

I do notice that hunting gold in a park that the tabs are over powering and if the nice mellow gold is under or beside the tab its very hard to hear over the tabs so I dig them out it does result in gold finds , mind you I do not use my ctx to hunt gold. to heavy for up down all day.

same principle though and well dig everything in a park that's produced old coins there will still be more there hiding and sube's screen stuff has opened this up a little but most of us are not screen watching that intensely for hrs on end , I do hope the new software update if we ever get one will have some more see through ability

still to been out and trying any hunting using the screen as shown been sick , but its on the list of things to do after.

I am sure you are right Sube, he just did not have one. I have offered to loan him my ctx 6 in coil , be interesting to see if he re hunts and can find even more with it, if he takes me up on my offer. Your test got my interest peeked up i have some other machines besides my ctx i am going to try your masking setup with them and see how they do compared to my ctx with 6 in coil.

Yea I wish they could put audio in there with the trace but you have what you have now .It's still a great way to comfirm if it's a good target or not when checking targets will keep you from digging iron. sube

I've always felt it was because when you get a hole in your pocket, the first coins to fall out are the smallest ones.

In times past, people tended to basically wear out their clothes, and they had a much, much smaller 'wardrobe'.
In other words, they were much more frugal than our 'consumerism' society has become.

Additionally, they tended to carry more change and less paper money...since money had more value, you could actually buy things like big meals with the change in your pocket.
All that extra coinage in the pocket tended to promote wear and holes. And the first coins to 'jump ship' were the dimes and half-dimes.

Anyway, that's my theory.
