Marshes Mudflats and Wet Salty Sand

Boston Metal

New member
I am turning 50 and the wife will be spending around 300 for a new MD. My first MD since the 70's and boy have things changed. I am very excited to get back out there and can't believe I have waited this long. Anyways I have miles and miles and miles of mudflats to explore and I have watched these flats for years without seeing detectorists so I want to try them. I don't want to get a PI machine or a pure surf machine yet, I figure if I use my "coin-shooter" and like the sport I'll soon get a higher end surf unit. I'd prefer new to used.

I can tell from many sources the F4 is a solid coin shooter. My question is have any of you used them in Marshes Mudflats and Wet Salty Sand? I would like to know if it is usable, as I'm told many coin shooters have too many false reading to be usable under those conditions. A shop owner told me the F4 would work better than most.

Thank you in advance!

I could be wrong, but I'd think the sink rate would be so extreme that anything old would be several feet deep

The F4 is a good machine, although it's not that deep (6-7" tops) and in discrimination mode it has a fixed ground balance (which could be important for your challenging sites).

I would recommend to pick up something that will GB to salt, like the F5, F70, or Omega (some of the lower Teknetics models may GB to salt too, not sure).
