Marshes Mudflats and wet salty sand

Boston Metal

New member
I am turning 50 and the wife will be spending 200 to 300 for a new MD. My first MD since the 70's and boy have things changed. I am very excited to get back out there and can't believe I have waited this long. Anyways...It seems to me I can get a lot for my money with the BH line. I can find older (but still new) time rangers for 300, Discovery 3300's for 250 and a scratch and dent Pioneer 505 for 200! So many choices. I have read that some Bounty hunters don't work well in the wet salty sand. I figure I need Ground balancing that really works. Any thoughts on which of these three will best suit my conditions? The Time ranger looks a bit much for me since I am essentially a "newbie" so particularly anyone use the 3300 or the 505 in the mudflats a lot? I have miles and miles and miles of mudflats to explore and I have watched these flats for years without seeing detectorists so I want to try them!

I am not planning to use it underwater, just low tide mudflats. I know I really need something higher priced, but 300 is the limit, so please let me know if there is anything that will work well enough within my budget. I can get a Cobra Wader for 320, is that the way to go? I feel like I lose a lot of features a newbie like me could use with the wader (no lcd no notch, no ground balancing)

Thank you in advance for any replies.

i own a 3300 and it is a very good detector allthough a little slow. the others you mentioned are good also but i do not think they will handle wet salt!!!! take your time and do some research before you decide.

I have to agree with Beach Hunter, Go for the better detectors, in the long run they will pay for themselfs much quicker. Even If you have to go a little longer to get one it is well worth the wait. Check the classified forums here on findmall, and tnet always some good deals, but they don't last long. joe

Any where near salt and you will get frustrated using those detectors mentioned, for very little more you could get a second hand Sov xs, or xs2a that would be the perfect choice for that terrain

Is a good machine, lightweight and will work most anywhere's, it is waterproof and the headphones are water resistant. I believe it retails for $374 on Ebay in Ebay stores (safe place to buy) but I have seen used ones for $250-$300 on the forum classified. We have the original version and it works very well, we also have Excals to compare it against. The Pro is a much better machine. Corba is not one of the better known brands.......it is a quick fix machine in many ways!!! Check with Kellyco, they offer deals with the better machines, but you will find prices pretty much the same no matter which dealer you use, it is the extras they offer.

Quincy, MA (Near Boston) lots of mudflats to explore.

Check out A&S Company ---- www.detection.com . They have the best prices. Got a new Garrett Infinium with a second coil 8" mono included for $849.00 shipping included. They have alot of good deals and were great to deal with.

you can buy the single freq. machines and learn the hard way that they don't work
on salty beaches/ground,like a lot of us did.Just go for the best and you will
thank yourself later. And buy" used" only from a trusted forum member,or
a reputable dealer, or ebay seller.HH Joe

Ditto, ditto on the Sovereign. Try to hold out for one in good shape. Your competition is out there in force(shoulder to shoulder) using high end detectors and not leaving much for cheap detectors to find. If you don't believe it check out the beach on a non weekend day at low tide.
