Todays hunt started out at the base of a hill along the Mississippi River. Theres a flat spot that use to have some kind of dwelling. It may be one of the oldest sites in northern Missouri. Ive hunted it before and have dug some relics but no coins. It would be a perfect location for a trading post for river travelers. There use to be a trading post in the area and this may have been it.
I spent about thirty minutes there and dug up some rusty relics. An old padlock , big hook and other stuff. The hill is steep and I thought I saw a flat spot half way up , so I set out to investigate. It was an optical illusion . I was half way up the treacherous climb so decided to go all the way up. When I reached the top i started searching for flat areas and old trails. Old trails are often along the very edge of bluffs and steep hills. I dug up some misc trash , shotgun shells and bullets. One area along the edge I found a definite worn down spot where there was an old path. I started searching it and in a minute the Vaquero meowed in both disc and all metal. But it disc'd. out at nickle. I thought it was another shotgun shell. Six inches down pops out a tiny coin. At first I thought maybe a half cent. I have never seen a half cent before. I couldnt wait so I spit on it and gently rubbed my fingers over it creating a mud slurry. The face of Mark Twain appeared. Its a street car token. I have found one of these before. I have never before seen one of these or heard anybody else who has one .I now have two , sometimes luck is with me ..Here it is next to a dime.
Heres a a photo of the Mighty Mississippi taken at the spot where I found the token.
and last , the trash pile photo.
I thought it was fitting to find a Mark Twain token within eyesight of the river he use to pilot on .
