Marbles! Marbles! Marbles!

Well, I haven't really made a post in awhile, but I started making some good finds awhile back.

On the 14th, I had to work a split shift. I only thought I was going to be gone for a couple hours, but I had miss-read the schedule, and in fact, I had 4 hours off. I headed over to a large area of scraped lots in a suburb. We had gotten a lot of rain previously, and I was hoping to score some marbles.

I drove into the area, found a likely-looking spot, and started looking around. At first, I was just trying to eyeball some marbles. No dice at the first spot. Lots of glass frags, potsherds, etc., but no marbles. I moved to a different area, and immediately spotted a marble. Some quick looking around netted two more. I started checking some other likely-looking areas, and started scoring marbles pretty regularly. One particular area, about 200' square, yielded up 10 marbles. total count on marbles for the day was 20. I did pull the detector out the last hour, but never found any old coins. Here's a shot of the marbles:

Yesterday, I went back to the same spot before I went to work. Sure enough, I started getting a couple marbles here and there. One was even IN MY TRACKS from the previous week. I didn't find any coins, but I did score two OK 1-mill tax tokens. They're pretty eaten up, so I didn't take a pic of them. Just before I called it a day and packed it in to work, I got a nice sounding hit. I flipped over some dirt, and saw a large, flat, piece of metal. I picked it up, and noticed some writing on it. I could clearly see "1924" on the "bottom" of the piece. I started brushing off the loose dirt with a little brush I carry, and picked out some more words. I rotated it to see it, and discovered I was holding a "Colorado Licensed Driver" badge. The pin is missing from the back. It took me four hours to realize that it's shaped like a car, seen from the front.

Of course, when I was taking pics of the marbles tonight, one of my kids must have come up behind me and palmed it. Now, I've got to find it again before I can take a pic of it!

I did manage to score 5 more marbles are this spot. Here they are:

Today, I went back (this place is HUGE, about 20 - 30 acres). I didn't really have a lot of time, even though it's my day off. I was just scouting around, looking for another little hotspot. I did manage to find two more marbles, a piece of milk glass, probably from a jar of Vaseline, a rusted padlock, and the usual odds-and-ends. Here's a pic:

I'm not totally sure what it is, except that it's made out of milk-glass. It's about the size and shape of a small jar of vaseline, so I'm thinking maybe is the lid to an early jar of vaseline.

Not counting the 27 marbles pictures, I have 93 from previous hunts. As many times as my kids have busted into my marble jar, I'm sure there's more floating around inside the house. Every now and then, one of the kids will bring me one. I now keep them in a secure container that they cannot open.

Heck, I just found two fairly intact black marbles with a little bit of white swirled into them. So, counting the one in the post, the one that fell apart in my hand, and those two, I've found four dark with white swirl.
